Winchester 670 Updating

I have an old Winchester 670 Carbine .243 that I was thinking about modernizing. It was my first deer rifle when I turned 11 and I have a lot of nostalgia for the rifle but it could use a little accurizing. I see Boyd's makes 670 stocks and can do them with pillars and I believe if I find a barrel maker that can do a Win 70 they will fit.

The trigger is fine but not great, good enough for sub MOA but I don't know if anyone makes aftermarket triggers for them? If so I would definitely get one.

The goal would just be a fun range and hunting rifle shooting sub MOA.

Is this reasonable or would I be significantly better off starting with a more modern and widely used action instead?

If my memory serves me, the 670 is a model 70 action. The 670 was a more economical rifle, cheaper wood, no floor plate (blind magazine), rougher finish. I don't think you will find a prefit for a model 70. Their tenon length can vary slightly from action to action, would have to be fit to the action by a gunsmith/rifle builder. What you are proposing is very reasonable.

The model 70 trigger can be easily set to under 2 pounds, but it does require some finesse. I used Model 70 actions a fair amount and still do. I like them.
Timney makes a good replacement trigger, if that appeals to you. It should be possible to get a pre-fit for a Model 70, or you could go with a nutted barrel. WH

Thank you sir. That is what I have found as well. I believe they are also only long action even in short action cartridges.
So to get it rebarreled I would find a good gunsmith and hand him a 6mm barrel blank of my choosing, but it should be doable.

Yes, very doable. And as Mr. Henry pointed out, the model 70 trigger lends itself to a trigger job and there are good aftermarket triggers available.

A trigger job, or new spring, or Timney. I would adjust it. They are easy to adjust and pretty good from the git go. Some searching might land a Jewel on the used market. If you do swap out the original, hang onto it.

A longer cartridge may, depending on caliber, require a longer mag box, spring, and follower. May again, depending on the cartridge length need to modify the ejector. If you go that route.

Free float barrel and bedding the action are a plus. Those stocks are plain most often, but have potential when refinished and bedded.

If I had a 670 free and clear, I’d rebarrel it to 6.5x55. I’m biased though, I’ve been thinking along those lines for a few months now.

Oh man there’s so many things I would like with the .470 bolt face, assuming a cartridge change would work with this action. I think top of the list would be a 6 Dasher. But if not I’d still be happy with a .243.

A dasher, I think, would be hard to feed from that action’s magazine. If you are ok with single feeding, it would work, a single shot follower would work also.

If you want a dasher, all you need to be cost effective is a barrel chambered. Then a few tweaks as mentioned in this thread, and go shoot.

I went cost effective some years ago, and got a 6br chambered for a Model 70 SA. I single feed it. But I seem to favor single shots…

I may not be 100% correct because I've only seen them listed online, but I believe there are model 70 push feed prefit barrels. Whether it will work on the 670, I have no idea.
