Win M70 LA Ideas?

Hello Folks,

I recently bought a Win M70 LA in .30-06 with one box of 20 rounds through it. It appears it was made in 1987 and was a "Lightweight" with the thin barrel. Not being one to leave well enough alone, I'm going to re-barrel it soon. Been thinking about .280 but not really sure. I know what many of you are going to ask. What's the gun going to be used for? Well, mostly just shooting paper or steel. Might use it for F-Class when I'm not using the one that is being built now in .240NMC. Might even take it out from time to time for deer season or to shoot varmints as I've got some places with rather long shots, like over 800 yards.

Pondering doing a 28-30" barrel and putting it in a Manners T4 or McMillan A5 stock.

So anyways, give me your thoughts please. I'm young, impressionable and looking for something interesting to do with this LA. I have this nice new Grizzly G0509G lathe that is begging for me to play on it with some rifle stuff. I think it's tired of just being a pistol lathe...

FWIW, I currently shoot and load for .308, .223, .260, 7mm Mag, .22-250, .30-30 and soon the .240NMC.

So those of you purposing the .280AI, would you do the SAAMI spec one like is currently being made for production ammo or would you do the REAL one with a 40 degree shoulder?

Not to muddy the water but I have a Krieger Med Palma barrel, 30" for a M70 chambered in .260 Rem. It has less that 300 rounds through it when I switched the rifle over to .308 for Palma shooting.

If that would be of any interest to you I would sell it for $200.00 shipped.

Also, to those shooting the .280AI, what can you say about barrel life?

The 280 sounds good to me, I would use a reamer with neck dia you want to use and throat configuration for your choice of bullet not just a factory chamber.

If you want something different, how about a 6.5-06AI?
