Wilson Seater die ? Will this work?

I am gonna try and fine tune my Dads 22BR and I would like to use my KM arbor press and Wilson seater die to check neck tension, but I dont have one. Could I use the seater stem out of my .223 seater and drop it in my 6br seater ?

the seater stem is the same in all 6mm wilson dies, no need to change it, just use the 6br stem

I think not. The seater stem on Wilson dies is made to fit with very tight tolerances. Not that is is recommended but you can drop a bullet (6MM for example) in the top of the seater die with the stem removed and then replace the seater stem to seat the bullet. A 22 cal. stem will have far to much slop in the 6MM/243 hole, and the hole is to big for the 22 cal to line up correctly.

Unless I misunderstood his post, he wants to use a .224 stem in a 6mm/243 size hole.

that's what I thought to, but the stem isn't made for a specific bullet so the 6mm stem should work just fine on .22 cal bullets, it just sits lower on the bullet but shouldn't have any negative affect on seating.

as have been said.. the .223 stem will wiggle in the 6mm die, but the 6mm stem will work fine on your .22 bullets.

Again, the poster wants to use a 22 cal stem in his 6 MM BR seater, the hole size is too large for the smaller 22 cal stem to fit the hole in the top of the seater correctly. Yes the stem is not made for a specific bullet, but the stems dia. is made for a specific caliber: .22 vs. .243 vs. .30, etc.

Please also remember the poster wants to fine tune the 22BR loads. The thing about the Wilson dies is their tight tolerances is what gives better runout. Since a 6mm BR was not designed to be used as a 22 BR the overall fit will throw off the major advantage in using a Wilson die in the first place.

You are correct, looks like thats not gonna work. Thanks !!

I just put the tip of a Berger 108gr in to the hole of my Wilson 6mm stem and it wiggled, I did the same with a .22 bullet and it wiggled.. just not as much.

the stem is supposed to touch the bullet as little as possible, therefore it will wiggle on all bullets, it just touches a small ring on the bullet, whether it is .05 from the tip or .08 from the tip makes no difference in seating, that's why the same tip works on many kinds of bullets regardless of their shape.

the stem isn't made to push the bullet by the ogive but about half way from the ogive to the top, so the 6mm stem works fine on .22cal bullets, even .22lr led bullets.

You are really missing the point, and I am not trying to be overbearing. The Wilson seater dies are basically designed to resemble a rifle's chamber. Yes a 22 Br will fit in a 6MM BR die, but the bullet has the possibility of being seated off center since the neck size of the 6mm is larger than the 22. I am not saying that you cannot do the loading, I am saying what is the point of trying to fine tune a load when you have introduced the possibility of added runout, or the worst case possibly crushing the neck because the bullet was not perfectly centered.

I know, but the neck size wasn't a part of the question in the beginning but the seater stem.

I buy blank Wilson dies and ream them with the same reamer as the rifle so I have a perfect match... and they are much cheaper than chambered dies.

Yes but fine tuning was listed in the original question. The only way to fine tune is to take out of the equation all that can give you any possible variance. That is why you do what you do to get the best possible outcome.

I find it hard to believe that anyone would use a .224 stem to seat .243 bullets while looking to fine tune a load, and then another person says it's fine to do that, when your looking at close to .020 difference between the stems.. I make my own seater dies from left over barrel cut offs, and fit the stems to a perfect slip fit when looking for the utmost accuracy.....
