Wilson In-Line NS Die Sizes Almost to the Shoulder

I bought a Wilson in-line neck sizing die in .223 Remington. It sizes the full length of the case neck (0.200") right down to the beginning of the shoulder. My Redding NB FL die only sizes 0.175" of the case neck. I am using Redding bushings in both dies.

Is there a way to reduce the length of the neck that is sized with the Wilson die?

I can think of three ways. One would involve a dremel and a grinding bit to enlarge the ID of the bushing at the bottom. Downside of that is its not precise and it is not reversible. You could easily ruin the bushing. The other would involve going down to the neighborhood hardware store and getting some longer screws for the dies cap and some washers with an ID larger than 5/8's so the bushing could float up. You would need to drill the washers for to allow for the cap screws to pass through to the die body. A bit more work but more precise and reversible. The third would be getting someone with a lath to cut some shims instead of using over the counter washers and using them with longer cap screws. This would be the most precise and professional method but also would have the largest cost factor

edit 4th method - place some 1 inch OD washers or shims with a ID large enough for the case to pass through between the die base and die body, effectively moving the bushing away from the case head

LE Wilson has always been more than helpful, perhaps give them a call.

Here's what I've done when messing with Wilson neck sizing dies:

Put an 'o' ring under the die top screws to hold the top away from the die body. Then, put an 'o' ring under the bushing and you're in business. If you see better accuracy, then you can make a spacer that holds the die top above the body of the die for a better long term solution.

If you can A-B-A- test meaningfully, don't be surprised if sizing the entire case neck length gives better accuracy. ;)

Here is what caused me to measure how far the Wilson die is sizing the neck.

I have been using a Redding NB FL die to size the neck and bump the shoulder a coupe of thousands. When I used the Wilson die on cases that were fired a few times it actually changes the shoulder by a couple of thousands. The Redding die sizes the neck 3/16" like they advertise. The Wilson does almost 0.200". How did the Wilson die cause the shoulder to change? I checked the die body to be sure there was clearance on a fired case so it had to be the bushing that altered the shoulder.
