Wilson die question

This is my first experience with a Wilson neck sizing die. I notice that when I size the neck it only sizes about 50%-60% down the neck and I hear that is normal. The problem is when I try to use the wilson seating die the case wont go all the way into the die so it wont fit flush. At first I thought it was the case body not letting it go in, but thats not it.

I can take a fired case and use a diffrent neck sizer that does the whole neck and it works just fine in the seater die.
However, I want to use the Wilson neck sizer at the range.

Does anyone know of a fix or had any experience with the case neck expanding to much to let it fit in a Wilson die?

Its a factory WIN .308, Lapua brass.
Thanks.

Sounds like a set up problem to me, no way will a bushing die allow a neck to expand to much unless your using the wrong size bushing.
The only reason a case won't go all the way into a seating die is if it's to long or to fat to fit properly....

Your necks are to big to fit in the die. You need to send it to Wilson and they will fix it. Send 3 cases with that have been sized. The die is set up for a neck turn probably and your neck is getting stuck. Take a marker and color the whole case and push into the seater and see where the black is missing.

That is correct. The part that is being sized fits in the seating die just fine, but the 40% of the neck that isnt getting sized by the neck die is the part that gets stuck in the seater.

If I resize the entire neck with the same bushing on a Redding neck die it slides right into the seater and works great but I dont want to bring another press to the range.

The necks are turned to .014 with a K&M turner, bullet is .308 and Im using a .334 bushing so I get .001-.002 neck tension depending on spring back.

Would I send the seater off to have it honed out for the unsized portion of the neck, or would I send the neck die so it will size the whole neck?

Thanks.

Its up to you, I guess. Wilson dies by default only size the first portion of the neck. Many folks feel that having the rest of the neck closer to fired diameter allows less 'slop' when the cartridge is chambered. Personally, I'd see about having the neck of the seater honed out a bit... call L.E. Wilson Tool & Die in Cashmere WA and see what they have to say about it.

hello from uk Im new to 6mmbr.com and fairly new to reloading, but I had same problem with cases tight and sticking in wilson neck dies in 22br after fireing, I was advised to use a shoulder bumbing die first this did the trick.Hope this helps you.

Wilson will also modify your neck sizing die so it sizes the entire length of the case neck. I've had several of mine done this way by them. Since a case that has had the entire length sized fits your seater fine, this should work fine for you. -Al

P.S.: I've never seen any difference in my testing with an unsized lower neck portion. Not saying "never"...just that I've not seen it.
