Wilson Case Trimmer shell holder

Evening all,

Just got done mounting my case trimmer and am going to use it for the first time. I insert the .223 case into the Wilson holder. The directions say to tap the head on a piece of wood. Is there a positive stop in the holder for the case? If not, depending on how hard I tap the case on a piece of wood this will change my trim length every time so then I will have to measure each and every one. Then if I tap just a little harder to seat the case good, then I have to tap on the neck just AS hard to get the case out of the holder. Am I doing something wrong here? Please any help would be greatly appreciated.

Usually, a fired case will protrude somewhat from each end of the case holder. This is not always true with virgin brass. The body of the case is the only stop. If the case is not held tightly against the sides of the Wilson holder, it can spin while you are trimming. Tap the rim lightly on a piece of wood, and after trimming, tap the case mouth. Try to tap it flush so that the mouth is not bumped. Always champfer the mouth inside and out when finished.

Both the base and the mouth of the case should extend beyond the die. The base goes up against the stop screw which determines the trim length.

You only need to tap the case in enough to keep it from turning. Doesn't take much to do that and they will come out with a light tap also.

If a new case is going into the die too far you may have a "fired case" die. Wilson makes both kinds but they are usually marked.
