Wilson Arms SS Barrel Blanks - .17; .20; .224 - group buy

We have a small barrel company - Barrel Brothers staring up in Sparks, NV... We have been working with Wilson Arms buying blocks of a 100 barrels at a time. I just found out that I can order small caliber barrel blanks. The question I have is with the twist rates. Wilson will ONLY run a .17 cal 10 twist and .20 cal 12 twist. With the .224 - we are currently running a 10 twist for the Light Varmint (1.200" shank diameter, 3" shank length, straight tapper to .800" at 26") and a 12 twist on the #4 contour (1.200" shank diameter 2.750" shank length tapers to .685"). We are also able to flute the barrels as well. We also have Savage pre-fit .224 barrels in either 14 twist or 7 twist available now...

Would there be interest in a group buy of .17 cal 10 twist and .20 cal 12 twist barrels in either the #4 or LV contour? Also I can change the twist on the .224 barrels as well. At this time - we are limited to those 2 contours.

160 - Wilson SS Contoured barrel blanks
150 - group pricing if I can pull a total of say 10 of each caliber on the .17 10 twist and .20 12 twist. We can offer other calibers as well in the group buy.

Let me know as I am due to place another decent sized order with Wilson in the next 3 weeks. I will get them to run a few small bores for us if there is enough interest...

IF, IF, IF...............Wilson will give you their ear, a 12 tw on a 204 cal bbl is IFFY for stabilizing the 40 gr offerings. Above that wgt probably cuts the % to low single digits, if that much.
Kinda like offering the 350 in the old days with a 2 bbl manifold but no 4 bbl option.
I would think whoever planned this mfrg criteria, needs to reconsider. Heck, if they are running a batch of 10 tw bbls in another cal and if not a prob to "only change out the button," that would be a better option hands down.
I'm thinking it is a time factor for production/set up.
I know I wouldn't want a 12tw, 204 under a Christmas tree.

Thanks for the input!! I have only built a few small caliber rifles and was pretty much told by the shooters what they wanted with the twist; contour and length... I don't think I'm PO Ackley so I figured I had better ask shooters who have more experience in the small calibers. Something I am just starting to play with...

I will visit with Wilson and see how flexible they are... Thank you for the advise and input!!

I figured the 10 twist .17 would work - it would be nice to offer a 9 twist as well but... With the 20 cal it sounds as if the 12 twist is a no go?

10 twist won't stabilize the 25 Vmax in most cases. I would put it right there with the 12"t.

I have had only So-So luck with the 12" twist especially with the 40 V-Max--10" would be much better or faster

I just learned something. The " breaking point re stabilizing" a 25 gr 17. Apparently, a 10tw ain't gonna do that either with any degree of certitude.
L S S. -. 11tw = 20 and 9tw = 17 for openers.
I bought a bbl from a guy who said he lobbied "James Calhoun hard for an 11 for the 19Cs. Would not do it, thought it would lower his MV too much. I guess Bryan Litz(sp?) hadn't done his testing yet, negating that concept to near single digits.

"With the 20 cal it sounds as if the 12 twist is a no go?"

Exactly - I went through two 20 cal, 12" Twist barrels, and neither would shoot the 40 V-Max. I called Hornady and they said it rarely will work in a 12-T barrel.

I would not take a 12" Twist, 20 cal barrel for free.

At this time I am sorry to report but Wilson will only do 10 twist .17 and 12 twist .20 cal. I offered to purchase the buttons to do 9 and 11 twists, but I got the at this time speech... Sorry to disappoint and if things change with Wilson - I will update!

I have heard reports of people tearing up 55 bergers in a 8tw. out of high velocity 20 cals. I have shot 55 bergers at 500 yds in a 9tw. and showed absolutely no instability at all good groups and nice little round 20 cal holes.

Sherm is correct, a 9 twist will easily stabilize a 20 caliber 55 grain Berger bullet, as a matter of fact most 10 twist barrels will do the job.

We now have a few .17 #4 SS 10 twist and .20 #4 SS 12 twist contoured barrel blanks available for 180 shipped.

Wilson is ONLY offering 10 twist .17 and 12 twist .20. I know these might be wrong twist for the heavy pill shooters but for the light pill shooters these are lights out barrels at a great price!

We will update on raggedholebarrels.net soon... You can send an email to bookredsox@gmail.com to order.

You're right, the wrong twists for the large majority of bullets in those calibers.
