Wildcat ?s

Novice reloaded, so all suggestions/advice welcomed.

Please understand I can't divulge parent case.

1)How to determine trim to length with a wildcat? Not all cases have the same. Some similar are 0.010" short.

2)Does shoulder angle effect trim to length? 20° vs 30°.

3)Will brass flow (growth) more with unfired than fired?

4)Should neck length growth be less with a 30° shoulder as compared to a 20°.

without divulging too much info your case designer/reamer maker can tell you trim length. if that part is not known maybe its too soon to design cases?

Rifle is built and finished first batch of cases today. Didn't think to ask about trim length.

it should be on the reamer print. if not have your gunsmith decipher it and tell you what max is and trim em all .010 shorter than that- maybe- its hard to answer any of your questions without knowing what case. some may be extremely short and never will grow there.

Damn, I didn' think to check that, will do as soon as I get home.

I trimmed 0.010 shorter than case length. I hope I didn' trim too short.

Measure the length of your actual chamber
You have to trim cases enough to get the formed cases to chamber if they start off too long.
Once fired the first time they will get shorter because they expanded.
When FL sized they will get longer because you squeezed them smaller. You then need to check the length again.

What are you doing with a wildcat if you have these kinds of questions?

Go to the SAAMI website and look at some of the chamber drawings. They allow at least 0.025" room in front of the trim length for safety. In other words any case will fit without running out of room for the neck. You don't have to worry about the end of the case being to long. If it isn't a serious target rifle I would trim to half way between the longest and shortest. Longer less room for a carbon build up. The short ones will get longer and match the other ones.

I'm gonna have my gunsmith measure chamber and gonna check the reamer print.
We fired 3 proof loads through it after he chambered it.

Yeah, I should have asked y'all before trimming. So with new cases (unfired) you say they will get shorter, is there any harm firing them if trimmed .010 short of full case length?

Yes I noticed the lengthening after forming and FL dies.

Well the questions are because I'm new to this and know the best people to ask are y'all.

Should I expect less case growth with a 30° shoulder versus a 20°?

I really appreciate y'alls knowledge.

what's the body taper? what's the parent case and which brand are you using? we would really like to help but if youre trying to keep something secret from us we cant help but only so much. no matter what case youre using and no matter how its modified its been done before and theres guys here that can help. no need for secrets around here.

I did and similar case sizes were .010 trim so that's what I did but those were with less shoulder angle. That' why I'm curious and asking if a steeper shoulder will grow less and thus need less trim.

I'm not worried about accuracy right now, just load development. Nothing on the books for a starting point.

Not yet, you guys are too smart and will figure it out and then crank this out quicker than I can.

Any help y'all can give is much appreciated. Soon I'm gonna have questions for y'all about powders and types of primers.

Yeah, I'm actually surprised but it doesn't appear anyone has ever attempted this or at least hasn't made it public. Even the reamer mfr was surprised.

It may just be that the last guy who tried it was in over his head and didn’t survive the proofing process.

Honestly, for safety sake, some of the questions you’re asking can’t be answered without a bit more info.

I don’t have much experience with wildcat’s, but I do have enough experience blowing guns up to encourage you to answer questions you’re being asked.

If you’re worried about someone stealing your cartridge, take it private. Most likely once it becomes known, some one will name a few things very similar that might have saved you some work.

Possibly or turned out to be a turd.

This step I'm just curious about trim lengths. Working with gunsmith on load development. Also have been given some suggestions from Accurate and Hodgdon on powders to start with.

We're taking slow steps. Last thing we wanna do is blow up this expensive venture. That would suck.

As Dusty said, there is nothing new under the sun - P.O, Newton, somebody has done before. If it's something you are going to try and market I can understand keeping it on the DL but with your lack of experience and reluctance to give much info you are in some real hairy territory.
Your question reads like - "I plan on traveling to the moon, how much 02 do I need to bring with me? "
Can your at least give the volume of the case and weight of projectile you plan to use?
