Wierd case shoulder lip after sizing

This is a 6mmBr Lapua case that was resized in a Redding body die today. I didn't notice this in prior sizings. But now my case are developing a lip at the case body shoulder junction. The lip is felt with the finger. It is raised toward the neck in a straight line upward from the base. I re-adjusted the die but had to go back to the same spot to fit my chamber. This is a no neck turn chamber. Hopefully you can see in the picture what I'm talking about. It's not a big edge but is definitely there. I cleaned the die several times. The shoulder is being bumped .001" to fit chamber. Sometimes I see a small sliver of brass that has been shaved off the shoulder junction. Is this a bad die ? It may have been happening prior but didn't feel or see it before. So don't know for sure. I do know it does it to every case I size now !! I'm using Imperial size wax and there's lube on the shoulder junction and case body. Any suggestions ?
Thanks again,
Rmist

Bad die - I had similar problems with one of Redding's 22-250 body dies.

They swapped it for me.

I'll call them on Monday. But in the meantime...will it hurt much if I size them one more time? I have a match on Sunday next week and need to load for it.
Thanx again

It looks like it just isn't sizing the whole neck. As long as the brass chambers with no issues it should be fine to shoot. My bushing dies do this.

Back the die off about 1/2 turn and lube the same case prodigiously and then size it again.

Could just be set just below the body length so makes the lip.. Ask me how I know....

I see (I think) a burnish mark on the body of the brass at the shoulder/body junction. Looks like it might be a tight spot in your die which could easily cause the burr to form on the down stroke. It's probably swaging just a bit more with each sizing. If this is the case I'd ask the MFG. to replace the die AND the brass. The case body may very well be thinned and weakened at the burnish point. ...... On the other hand it could be caused by a wide spot in the chamber ???? Just my .02 Good luck!

This is with a body die...it doesn't touch the neck at all. I don't have a FL die for this. Just the body die. I will get another die. I did move the die out using Skips shims at .001" at a time. This is where it bumps the shoulder just .001". My case measure 1.495" prior to sizing...after it's 1.494" using the bump gauge in the picture. If it's 1.495" I have hard bolt closure with firing pin removed. This is a BAT action. I think Catshooter is right and it's a bad die. I've never had any other case do this during any reloading step.

I can feel the case pull on the down stroke of the press ram. The burr is going away from the case body straight up like it's pulling the brass as it comes out of the die.

LOL, I was just thinking about adding the before and after measurements to my answer when your last post popped up. Looks like you've got a handle on it. Merry Christmas!

I had similar problems with Redding dies. Most people say they are best, but I have had a problem with every Redding die except one.

I've been having the same issue but in my case I'm using a Wilson neck bushing die. Lapua brass, 6.5/284. After 2 or 3 firings some (not all) of my brass does not want to go all the way up into my "gizzie" and the tight spot is right in the same place (shoulder/body junction). I de-cap with a seperate die that does no body forming at all, just decaps. When my brass gets to this point I run it into a Redding full BODY die and don't touch the necks at this point. With a .001 bump to the shoulder from the body die the brass will then fit all the way up into the "gizzie" but is now somewhat sloppy due to body die dimensions. I should add here that the body die is also sizing the lower part of the case. Not quite sure what's going on. I don't know of any way to size just the upper part of the case. I'm wondering if there is an issue with my chamber. Or possibly some mis-step in my reloading process. Dedogs

I took a better picture of what's happening to my brass. Tomorrow I'm calling Redding and emailing them this picture. You can see the fretting of brass in this pic !!

rmist,
The shoulder looks like you "turned" it. Its the die. It probably was not finished correctly judging by those marks on the shoulder. Redding will make it right. They are good guys. Wouldn't recommend sizing anymore brass though until you get the new die. When you fire the brass you've already sized all the bad stuff will most likely disappear.

If you can feel the ridge on the case, and it's the die itself to blame, then you should be able to feel an artifact there in the die. Take a pointed tool of some sort, like a dental pick, and softly drag it across that corner inside the die. Also, you might be able to see the artifact, looking inside from the base, with good lighting and vision enhancement (I would need to use my OptiVisor for close-up vision.)

If you happen to have some Cerrosafe chamber casting alloy, make a cast of the die's interior - there should be the same ridge on the casting.

Not all that long ago, I'd read and been told by a friend who deals with Redding alot, that they have been having problems with some of their personnel not properly polishing out the insides of their dies. Thus, he was told to send in whatever dies he's been having issues with. And like with Catshooter, they replaced those dies that could not be corrected with correct polishing procedures. More of a personnel and quality control issue that supposedly has been corrected and some employees were rightfully let go. Info only.

I talked with Redding and the die is going back along with one case. They said it will most likely be replaced.

Sid Goodling does all my rifles and barrels, NO issue there at all !! Once the brass is fired it looks like it's supposed to. Once out of the die it grows the ridge lip on the shoulder. I'm no longer using this die at all.

I already had this die set...only reason. He has made me dies in the past and your right they're really good.
