Width of Meplat?

Hope this is the right place.

Just curious. I am making my own projectiles with a Meplat of .080 in width. I meassured some of the Match Kings and they have a width ot .056 at the Meplat. How much do you think this will affect accuracy in .223?

I am not aware of a larger meplat having any effect on the accuracy of a bullet, although it has a definite effect on how aerodynamic the bullet is (i.e. affects the B.C. of the bullet).

You can also look into bullet tipping/pointing if you're seeking the highest b.c. possible for your bullet design. I don't think it will show much significance until the longer ranges.

Well I am making my own projectiles with Corbin dies. The ejection pis only allows for .078 at the best. I can have a buddy make one that can put it at .056 or something like that. Just not sure if it would be worth it. Corbin states that it is a 6 ogive.

I am making a 6mm 105, like yours it has a larger meplat. I've considered ordering one of these: http://www.bullettipping.com/ . I really haven't seen the need so far, I guess it would give me just a little bit of an edge at 1000 yards. Leave the meplats big if you use them on varmints, they should help with expansion.

To be honest I started reloading maybe 1 1/2 ago and started swaging about 6 months ago.

All of my shooting buddies say that I am wasting my time for swaging out of 22lr cases.

I do not hunt nor shoot past 200 yards through my AR as of yet. I can group within a nickle at 100 and about a quarter at 200 (5 shot groups).

I am just curious if squeezing that down is worth it or not for paper.

No your not wasting your time if you enjoy that sort of thing. I find it rewarding to shoot good groups with my bullets. Sounds like the 22lr jacketed bullets can shoot respectable groups for informal target practicing purposes.

B.C. will play less of a role regarding wind at your shorter distances, mainly because you still have quite a bit of velocity at these 100 and 200 yard distances. The meplat size won't play a role in the precision of your groups.

Ok. I do however think that getting a trimmer and a tipping die is what I may do. I have a buddy who is a whiz on making this type of thing at more than a reasonable cost. No need to not do it.

I would like to shoot out to 500 yards with the projectiles i can make. I just have never gone more than 5 miles in travel to see what my gun can do.

I do love doing this not only for them being .02 cents but being as accurate as .18 cent projectiles.

There is also a video on youtube where one swager is putting polymer tips in his bullets: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40keW-W373w

That video, as well as the ammosmith series youtube videos are pretty interesting.

Yup! I have even shot 22 projectiles made by him. Not the ones you have mentioned but some 55 gr HP's. No where near the accuracy I would expect for 22 bucks per 100.
