the 6.5 does come in light 85-100gr var bullets too. A 10 twist would be quite suitible for those weights. Not as much utility but Hey to each his own right.
One in ten is god for up to a 120gr bullet. You would not get a heavier bullet to stabilize very well or at all at extended ranges. I am sure they have their reasons for why they are doing what they are doing but I do not know why.
If you can launch them hard enough I do not see why you would not want to shoot the heavier bullets?
1-10 is jut to slow for the 139 Scenars or 142 SMKs. You won't be able to push the heavy VLDs fast enough to make them stabilize out of a 1-10 barrel and trying to push a bullet fast enough to make up for too little twist usually doesn't work out well anyhow.
1-10 will work fine with the 120 gr range of bullets.
At one time in the not too distant past, a 1-10 twist barrel was considered fast twist. It is only with the comparatively recent introduction of the 139-142 gr VLDs for long range shooting that a faster twist barrel was required.
Mine has a 1/9 twist and shoots most bullets just fine. I haven't tried 140 VLDs as it almost certainly won't shoot well. I can shoot 130 Normas fine buy wonder if they wouldn't shoot better with more twist. The most accurate bullet I have found is the 108 Lapua. Probably a result of the 1/9 twist.
It was conceived as a hunting rifle and I had no desire to shoot the 140 VLDs so I stuck with the factory twist.
dennis,
Have you ever shot any flat based 140gr bullets in it? A friend of mine has a 1/9" twist but she never fires anything longer than a Sierra 120 MK in it. I have wondered in the 140gr class flat based bullets would be stabilized in a 1/9" twist in a 400yd max. hunting rifle.
the other odd thing about it is that they also offer a 6.5x55 in a 1-8.5 twist, but the .260 in 1-10. Maybe they're worried about case capacity with heavier bullets in the .260 ???
