Why Shooting Is Interesting

Every now and then you get some unexpected, but pleasing results with rifles and ammo. The 5 shot group below is out of a $329 Remington 783 Tactical (16.5" barrel), shot with $9.95 a box of 20 ammunition, at 100yds. Scope was a 2x10 Leica and I did use my Silencerco Hybrid 46. I believe the vertical is my fault - the humidity was high and I should have put some powder on my rest and bag. Funny thing is I dropped the silencer to Magnetospeed the velocity and the group went to the 3" range. Naw, I didn't test with a bunch of groups because I use this gun to kill stuff and I could hit a 2" square at 200 easy. It'll work just fine. Plus, the rifle usually shoots good with decent ammunition.

That'll never work!
Cool! If it'll repeat, you've got a good one!

Well, I switched from 100 to the 2" square at 200 and it was easy to not miss. I will probably try grouping it again though. I just didn't want anyone to think I was laying down group after group. It was holding up at 200, so I parked it. I wasn't getting those results with my reloads and 55 gr Varmageddons out of the same rifle.

I frequently see those types of groups with factory ammo at the range with economy rifles, mostly in the 6.5 Creedmoor which it seems everyone is shooting these days.

Makes me wonder why I paid a ton of money for several custom barrels. :(

I have been playing with this rifle trying to get it to shoot 55gr Varmageddons with Benchmark and some other powders, and the results have been disappointing with a flyer out of every 5 it seems. When it was new and in the factory stock, it did a 3/4" average of 5 shot groups with 4 different factory loads. Since I have an AR that is very accurate with the Varmageddon/Benchmark load, I figured it would be great to have the same components for each rifle. I think now I'll just lay in some supplies of the V-max factory stuff. Which is put together in the AAC brand of Palmetto State Armory.

The folks I see at the range could use some tips then. They're typically thrilled to see an inch at 25.

Ooooook.

Ask them to do it twice in a row.

Well, I didn't do a detailed analysis of their consistency and I'm not saying that everyone I see shoots that well with an economy rifle, but I've seen enough of it to conclude it's not a fluke.

Just last Monday, a fellow I've seen at the range a few times with a 6.5 Creedmoor in a Savage Axis, shot a five-shot group at 100 yards that was under 3/4" judging from the 1" grid target he was using. This was done with factory ammo, I think it was a Federal brand.
