Why not a 6.5 dasher?

i was sitting here looking at my 6mm dasher and thought why not a 6.5 dasher. i have a fine deviant RBLP action and a 6.5 rock barrel a McMillan BR stock is coming soon and so is a nightforce scope. and if a grendel work why not dasher? i could put a bigger bushing in my Redding dies and figure out a seater i should be good to go
does anyone have experience with it or any thoughts on it? i would use it for short range or maybe out to 600. It would definately be something different

I know some guys who use a 6.5BR for handgun silhouette. They really like it. I've thought about a 6.5 dasher for that discipline. I don't know if you'll have enough speed to push the high bc bullets fast enough to do really well at 600. No doubts that they'll make it there, but the wind will get you compared to bigger cartridges.

I don't load for a dasher, but I think they are a 31-33 gr case? The 47L is a 40-42 gr case.
I dont think dasher can push the 140 anywhere near where they need to be to take advantage of the high bc.

Now, with the 100-108 gr 6.5 bullets it should get them in the 2700-2800fps range.
I have a 6.5-6.8 AR. (Spc necked down) 22" barrel. You can (very compressed) get 30 gr of 8208 in under a108 smk and get 2720fps at mag length.
In a bolt you can get a few more grains in there.

Research the 6.5 TKS created for High Power Rifle Silhouette a number of years ago by a couple of west coast shooters. Would probably work best with the 130 gr. but is essentially a "6.5 Dasher". I don't know who made the reamer(s).

I look at things this way, right or wrong. We could get by with precious few cartridges whether it be for hunting OR some form of competition. However, it is not what we NEED that fuels all the advancements in "riflery" and it's concomitant advancements in bullets, powder etc.. We always want "new / more / better" etc... I say if the person wants a 6.5 Dasher, let him go for it. Certainly there are cartridges that shoot faster and flatter and make more "sense" per se, for the intended purpose he (the OP) is asking /thinking about. But that may not satisfy an "itch" he needs to scratch. I know, I am like that myself! I have shot more rifles, calibers, cartridges etc.. than I should be allowed to shoot. I bought or built them because I needed to scratch an itch that would not quit.. So the reasons FOR trying something new, may not be understood by some, and the reasons for NOT trying it may be many and palatable, however, they can not scratch the itch if it gets bad enough!

SOOOOOO if you want something new and or different, GO FOR IT! There is no "Could have, should have" when we are too old (or worse) to enjoy the fruits of our shooting passion..

The dasher is a smaller case than the 6.5x47L, by about 5-6 grains of powder. I think it would probably do ok at the short range BR stuff. The 6.5BR is a good handgun silhouette round so I don't see why a 6.5 dasher wouldn't be.

i look at it this way. im sure the 257 roberts is a fine cartridge so mr Ackley didnt NEED to improve it but he did anyway (and many others) and he made a really nice round out of it. then there is the 300 blackout or the 458 socom or the 6mm thermos bottle (look that one up haha) we didnt NEED those either. just sayin if you can shoot a deer with a 6.5 grendel then a 6.5 dasher would have to better for short-ish range with 120 class projectiles

Looks as if you talked yourself into it then. If nothing else, brass life should be close to indefinite.

Have some experience with small 6.5's (Grendel), I suspect you will see 2700-2750 with the 123's without leaning on the brass too hard, and that will work.

That having been stated (and you already knew it anyway), I cannot imagine a situation where you can have too many 6.5x47's.........

Found this old thread and am considering having my defiance actioned hunter class silhouette rifle re-barreled as I’ve shot out the 260 bobcat 26” number 5 contour lilja barrel after 4.5k rounds. It lasted a heck of a long time and was consistent with knocking down rams at 500m as long as there wasn’t a strong tail wind which would result in a non knockoff on rare occasions. I got my ten in a row Rams pin w this rig at Raton in 2017-18.

But a lot of peeps I respect like multiple time national champion Eric Boos also of Washington like me have switched to either dasher from the 6.5x46 or 6.5 creedmore as we shoot 80 shots in two matches each day and anything you can do to reduce recoil is great as in my case post liver transplant I’ve gone from 260 to 140lbs at 6’3”. So having not shot in a highpower match in 3-4 years due to illness I’m guessing I’m a bit more recoil sensitive and want to, since I’m changing barrels on my primary gun at least out of necessity. Why not mix things up. Though I will likely miss the cheap hornady 250 savage or 22/250 brass that I used to kneck size up to 6.5mm as even at the worst of times I could always find a deal on brass. N140 VV for 95gr v max bullets was a cream puff on everything out to turkeys at 385 meters switching to 140gd bullets it 139gr lapua scenars for rams at 500 w a moderate load of 36-37 grains of N550 VV power never made me feel under gunned.

Thoughts kind sirs? Let me hear em!

Being that this thread is nine years old, things change up. The original
intent was for a 6.5 Dasher. My only addition to that would be going to
a long neck Dasher with lots of throat. Other then that, the 6gt case did
not exist back then. I could see the gt being necked up for the lighter
boat tails on the market. Sierra lists a 100, 107, and 120 gr BT's. More
wild catting ground to cover.

I'm sure there's been some silhouette shooters experimenting with the new heavy 25 cal bullets. If they have enough momentum for rams maybe give a 25 caliber round a try to further reduce recoil. I don't know off hand how much velocity you'd need to suggest a case. Dasher? GT?

Depending on how much recoil is an issue, you may have to just shoot a 6mm and accept some lost rams. Better than not being able to shoot
