why can't i close the bolt on a 140 gr 6.5 Berger hybrid?

am working up a load for a new 6.5-284. been shooting 140 vlds. when switched to 140 hybrid, my bolt won't close. same brass. tried seating bullet deeper by as much as 30 thou. this doesn't help. brass is all resized, length checked. if i pull the hybrid and replace it with a vld, bolt closes! what the heck is going on?

If the bolt closes with the fire control out and doesn't with a bullet seated either the bullet is fat and makes the neck area too thick to fit in a tight necked chamber or the bullet is out to far. I am not really sure about the Hybrids because I don't shoot them but I know the bearing between a Hybrid and VLD has to vary. It could be more then 30 thousandths. If the hybrid is fatter it might be hitting in the throat quicker. Matt

Seat the hybrids deeper. Their nose profile makes the seat way out if you don't adjust die.
Did you check distance to lands with hybrids?
You can not interchange seating depths with different bullets, you must measure for each.

Just take the 2 bullets and stand them side by side and you will easily see the difference in the shape. Problem solved.

put it simply, measure the VLD with a comparator. take this length (CBTO [cartridge base to ogive]) and use it as a baseline to seat the hybrid.

you have to adjust your die and the hybrid and VLD do not share the same geometry.

As stated you will need to check the distance to the lands to know exactly what's going on. In the mean time is the hybrid round sticking in the lands on extraction? are three land marks on the bullet? you can marker the bullet and check. Also if the VLD's were above the donut and one developed and now the Hybrid is in the donut you may have stiff interference problems by the neck shoulder junction.

You may also want to create a dummy round for each. I do this by slicing up 2 opposite sides of a case neckwith a dremel tool, barely seating the bullet, and then inserting it in the chamber and closing the bolt and letting the bolt seat the bullet the rest of the way. There are other ways to do the same thing but i like to do this with each new box of bullets and especially if they are a different weight or style (vld vs hybrid example).
Best Wishes

just a guess... but are you sure you have the corret bullets ?.. you'd have to measure them to be sure, ..no flame intended

6.5 .264 cal.264
6.5 carcano .268
6.5 cal 6.8 cal .277

if i'm reading this rite.. thinking.. if the ogive is closer to the tip of his hybrid... seating the bullet in his seating dye would push the bullet deeper into the case... normally, incorret, but should fit an close??

22brguy.. been doing that split the neck thing a long time works great .. good point for dunraven

I believe the VLD is longer and more sleek thus the seater stem is pushing the VLD deeper in case because the seater stem is contacting the VLD more towards the tip and farther from the ogive. Matt

Easy way right here. That Hornady COAL length tool is worth it's weight in gold, I fought it for years, scoffing, dumba$$ move.

I you try all the good information given so far and you still don't get the Hybrids to fit your missing something really simple in an attempt to make it more complicated than it is. Don't ask me how I know that. ;)

pretty much near 4months without a reply from Dunraven.... Hmmm !... don't ya wonder ?

Did you load the hybrids with the pointy end in or the pointy end out? I know I stuff this up sometimes and have to close the bolt with my boot,

Doh, silly me. That is why the powder falls out of the case before I get the bullet in. :P
