Why 284 Win dominate, why not 284 Shehane?

Hi all,

Shehane actually nothing special and Complicated compared with straight 284.
Just by blowing the sidewalls out 0.010″, the .284 Shehane picks up about 3.3 grains of extra case capacity.
That means, with Shehane you will get 50-100 fps. faster than the straight 284 with same pressure... Or same velocytes with less pressure.
Great! That's what you / we need!
But, If we look on all past equipement lists (Berger SWN, FCWC and etc.) 284 Win totally dominate, WHY?

I have seen a couple of Shehane's at my range and I have not seen anything that made me want to switch.
I shoot the straight 284 win

Here is something to think about. I have seen that a figure of 3.3grs increase in case capacity from a "straight" .284 to the Shehane version. However, I have had 3 Shehanes and 2 "straight" .284's. It may very well be you get an increase of 3.3grs of water! However, in reality you get "about" 1.0-1.5 grains of increase. A "good NON-primer loosening" load for a "straight" .284 hovers close to 54.0grs of H4831 / RL-23. This is with the 180 Hybrids with a .220 freebore. If you went to 57.3grs of H4831 / RL-23 in the Shehane (the 3.3grs increase) you will loosen primer pockets in very short order. A better load would be close to 55.0-55.5 of those powders in the Shehane. So now ask yourself this question: "Do I really want to fireform brass to gain approximately a 2 percent increase in capacity"? Let's say you are running 2900 or so on the Shehane. You have a wind deflection of 4.9 m.o.a. of drift at 1000 yards. Now a "straight" .284 at 2825 or so, you have a deflection of 5.0m.o.a. Do you honestly believe you can ACCURATELY hold a 0.1m.o.a. at 1000 yards? Because if you do, you need to be shooting 1000 yard Benchrest and shoot 5 shot groups hovering at 1"! Now for question to yourself #2: "where is the benefit of the Shehane"? Just my 2 cents...

Speed makes a difference when the wind blows........

There are only 2 things that overcome wind: 1.) B.C. and 2.) Speed... However, B.C. is BY FAR the most important of the 2. You would need at least 150-200 f.p.s. increase to make any appreciable difference. This would normally mean that you must go to a magnum to get that level of performance. A 284 Shehane at 2900f.p.s. is formidable indeed. However, to REALLY make a difference, you would need to get a cartridge capable of launching those 180's at a minimum of 3050+! That would most definitely take a very stout charge in a magnum. This would also severely limit barrel life in a F-Class rifle. So although your postulation that speed would "make the difference" is in some way correct, it is also just as true that it is of minor significance to B.C. In the OPs question about a .284 compared to a .284 Shehane the 75f.p.s. difference is very inconsequential..

The shooter makes a difference when the wind blows... a bad call, is a bad call, no matter what you are shooting. I shot a Shehane for 3 years and it never saved me from myself. There's nothing wrong with a Shehane, if you don't mind the little bit of extra work with regards to brass, but people shouldn't be expecting it to save them when they make a bad wind call, just because it's a little bit faster.

EriK Cortina has beem whooping on the guys from Texas for a couple years with with a Shehane. But its only the whole state of Texas. I still whoop his ass with a straight 284. So does Scully. It is much more the Indian then the arrow.
Hey Bob....does Erik know that you can "whoop his ass"? Might be news to him there ;)

"ShootDots, I believe you forgot to mention another thing needed to overcome wind. That is the shooter's ability to read it, know what its worth, correct for it and take the shot before it changes.

You are right Bob! I do stand corrected.... Wind reading is something I have only a modicum of understanding about! LOL!!

I think I am going out and buy a large can of "whoop ass" today at Wally World.maybe this is what I have been missing in my diet all these years by shooting a straight 284.;) I wonder what I am going to blame my lack of being able to read the wind correctly on after drinking that large can of whoop ass?

Here's my take on it, saying that both shooters are of equal ability and are both using Rifles capable of say holding 1/4 -1/2 MOA elevation. The shooter using the Shehane beats the shooter using the .284 by a point or a V bull, eventually.
