Who’s hitting the fields during the Memorial Day weekend?

Spring seems to occur earlier here than you eastern guys it appears, as we started our rock chuck shooting a month ago, have already spent ten days in the rat patch on squirrels.

Some unwilling rock chucks shot last week here with my Cooper M38 Phoenix in 221FB:

And of course 'Skippy the Flying Squirrel' in launch mode recently:

One thing for sure....Spring IS here! So you eastern chuck and PD guys....remember that camera!

Ive been out a while on them with pals out here. They are exploding on all the ranches we shoot on.

Pa chuck hunter here as well.
Definitely not the quantity of shot you PD hunters enjoy , however we do get a fair amount of quality shots. Sometimes a smart chuck is akin to an old buck. He got that way by being smart. I'd like to get a chuck mount done up on day . Problem is most of them only qualify for closed casket once dispatched.

I've considered getting one mounted for a decoy. I get them with a 17HMR so they're still in good shape.

A slow day in the chuck fields , one can pose a few crow decoys around a dead chuck. Turn on the fox pro and wait....
They will come, more than likely just once but they will come.

Will be in South Dakota that weekend into June. First time ever to PD hunt for me. Don't really know what to expect, just gonna roll with the flow.

You’re about to gain a new and powerful addiction. It won’t be your last PD trip.

Be careful what you start, as has been said very addictive.. You will have a ball.. If your shooting of the ground, a word of advice tuck in your shirt, tape off your pants cuff, this will help prevent chiggers and ticks. Elbow pads and knee pads are also a help.
We will be out there the same week.

Shoot straight and often
Randy

Been out a couple times already for Pdogs stretching the legs on my 8 twist 22-250. Just got my 223 back from smith and had it improved. Now its time to switch rifles and start forming brass. Also gonna buy a mini mauser in 204 and have it re-chambered to 20vartag. See how Pdog shooting goes! fun stuff with a small break for spring bear

Thanks for the heads up. I wasn't aware that they had chiggers there. In my travels over the years I think Missouri and Oklahoma for chiggers. We've got ticks here pretty bad too. Never used to have the deer ticks variety, but have had those for several years now. Always just had the larger "wood" ticks before that. I have read on this forum not to pickup the prairie dogs so I'll stay away from those. We are going to be in the Mobridge area.

We are heading to North Dakota the week of Memorial Day.
Reports from there are that the PD's are more numerous than normal.
We will see what we can do about that....LOL

What are you guys doing for firepower, small caliber or the big stuff?
