I live in new york state, how unfortunate !
In the part of new york where I am from ,the typical shot is 100 yards or less. What are your favorite loads for this fine cartridge.I understand that I would have to reduce and work up.I have an encore rifle and need to get out this week and site it in.I have been using cast lead so far I now have a bunch of 405's,350'sand 300 's on hand. The 405's are flat points(flatpoints) and the others are hollow points. They are all remmy bullets except the 300's which are hornadys.

Re: who uses the 45/70 for whitetail deer?

I've used the Speer 300 gr. JHP on pigs and deer quite a bit with good success. My load is for a Browning 1885 and is a pretty stout load of Reloader 7. Note that my load is to heavy for lever guns and older single shots, but shoots great in the 1885 and No. 1's.

Re: who uses the 45/70 for whitetail deer?

My favorite load is the Barnes original 300gr semi spitzer .458 . #457010 which has a bc of .290.
I use it with 56-61 gr of reloader 7 or 55-58gr of vv120 which is my favorite.

This is in a #1 rifle not a lever gun. 2200fps to 2375fps depending on load.

Thumps the heck out of deer and hogs. The vv120 shoots sub moa groups out to 250yds.
The rl 7 kicks a lot more and is not quite as accurate.

It is the same load I use in my 50cal mzl. savage, except for sabots.

these loads work in my rifle, work up slow.

Re: who uses the 45/70 for whitetail deer?

For nostalgia, I sometimes shoot a true 1884 trapdoor, using IMR4227 and a 300 grain HP (Sierra?). It is super mild. On occasion I shoot the factory 405 grain round. For targets offhand the 300 is fun, and the 405 hits metal harder fer sure. As far as deer, i did shoot one cull deer with a 300 grain bullet. It was similar to a 75 yard hit with a 44 Mag. Nothing impressive, eventually dead. Not DRT, but not hobbling around either. I certainly would not want to be on the deer side of the equation!

Re: who uses the 45/70 for whitetail deer?

I used the 405 gr Rem FNSP hand loaded to 1650 fps from a Marlin Guide Gun to take a fat mulie doe at about 70 yards. The bullet went through both shoulders, disrupted the spine and dropped her like a hot rock. Very little meat damage, the bullet expanded, but apparently not a lot. It's buried out there somewhere in the sagebrush.

Very accurate, easy shooting load. I used Reloader 7.

I use H-322 and a 350gr. Speer in a 12" bbl. contender. Drop deer like they were struck by lightning. Also scares the hell outta the guy the next wood over!! ;D

Hi, My sons and I have Marlin guide guns we use to thin out the pig population on our ranch in Texas. We have used the Remington 300 and 405 grain bullets. Barnes 250 and 300 grain Hollow points. Some Hornadys I think they were 350 grain. If you load the 300 grain Remington to max loads the damage to a hog is unreal, exit wounds you can put your fist in and more. The 405 grain Remingtons produce about 3 in holes on exit. The Barnes as expected produce exit holes about an inch to 1 1/2 inches. I also tried some 420 grain hard cast bullets which acted just like a solid, but we don't have elephants here. However it does take trees and brush down easily.

My dad and I both shoot 45-70 some in a custom trapdoor but most in 2 marlins. Mine is a highly modified guide gun his is cowboy both shoot great. We both shoot, in the marlins 405 hardcast with 54 grs. of blc-2. Most deer either drop in their tracks or bleed out in the 1st 50 yds or less.

Re: who uses the 45/70 for whitetail deer? Keep it coming guys!

I have a 45/70 in an H&R Handi Rifle that I have hunted deer with, but use it mostly for thicker stuff and where I know shots will be inside 100yds as I still run irons on it. I usually shoot the 450gr flat-nose cast from my Lee mold, but I have a few other molds as well ranging from 300grs to 500grs.

I haven't been using the 45/70 barrel as much as I did in the past as I now have a 500S&W Mag barrel, and that thing is just an absolute sledgehammer. The 700gr HardCast bullets from Ranger Rick's are just awesome, though I tend to stick with lighter stuff on deer size game. But with the 700's, I feel confident that I can stop any stray Cape Buffalo that happen to be roaming the woods of Maine. :D

Big-Bore's are just awesome. I love the delay in the sound coming back after hitting the gong at 300yds. But you definitely know when you hit it.

Re: who uses the 45/70 for whitetail deer? Keep it coming guys!

well, I had a friend that guided in Alaska a couple of years ago. He carried a marlin in his boat while fishing for protection for himself & clients. He used it while guiding a moose hunt. the client made a horrible shot, he dropped the moose with one shot. I guess the ideal of packing out meat any farther wasn't a good one. he was using hornady ftx factory ammo. So I reckon it would kill a deer.
