Who to have bore/rebarrel Marlin 336?

Just inherited an early 80s Glenfield 30A.

Been in the family since new so I'm going to hang on to it.

I'd like to hunt with it but live in IA so can't with it as a 30-30, will have to bore/rebarrel to 38-55 or similar.

Have read the great reviews on JES, will definitely call them.

Are there any other companies that bore/rebarrel 336s or are they it?

Reboring is hit and miss. I would just select a barrel maker of your choice and order what you want after talking to the gunsmith you want to have do the work. I would keep the OEM barrel just in case you decide to sell it or local laws change.

I had JES rebore a Marlin 336 and a Winchester 94 from 30-30 to 38-55. They came out great. Fast turnaround and shot great. You keep the same barrel so the bluing will match, engraving will be there etc. Keep in mind that I have a full shop and rebarrel guns all the time, so labor cost for me is $0.00 and I still went with JES. There is a lot of extra work involved in rebarreling a lever gun compared to a bolt action. The contour needs to match exactly so the forend and mag tube hardware and barrel band will fit right. There is also a whole bunch of milling machine work for sights, mag tube clearance, fore end hanger, extractor cut, the extension on the back of the chamber that guides the cartridge into the chamber and obviously all of this needs to be timed with the threads (which are square).
I am not saying it’s a problem to rebarrel one, but you may pay more for the extra work compared to a bolt action. For example, Mcgowen charges $220.00 to rebarrel a M700 Rem and $500.00 for a Marlin lever action, not including the barrel.

Thanks for all the good information.

It's incomprehensible to me that the 45-70, 375 Win etc are allowed here while the 30-30 isn't but here we are.

Pretty neat gun really, like the simple lines and the history of it.

Did a basic field strip and clean last night, don't think that happened in a little while. Was a little surprised at how rough the tooling on the lever was and the action is a little notchy, will definitely be looking into how to smooth things up a little down the road. Should be a neat project to help clean up something to keep in the family.

If you want it to be beter than new, look into Doug Turnbull.I hope the spelling is correct. He can make it work and look as nice as you want or can afford.

I have had JES rebore a M94 Win from 30-30 to 38-55 and a M1917 Eddystone Enfield from 30-06 to 338-06. I gave very specific requirements on both and they have turned out to be as accurate as any other factory style barrel. Both bores are very smooth and easy to clean. The 94 was done strictly as a cast bullet shooter and has gone from being a 3-4" grouper to a smaller than I will say for fear of being called a liar grouper. The 338-06 has turned out to be a sub MOA rifle. Jess is old school and doesn't have a lot to say but his work is top notch. Oh, and, turnaround was EXTREMELY fast. From the time my guns shipped till I had them back in my hands was around 3 weeks. That may not always be the case but his words to me were " From the time I get your gun, you will have it back in around 2 weeks". Can't beat service like that, it being such a rare thing these days.
