Who ,makes a good off road tire?

muleman69

Looking for a tough off road tire for work and hunting,I have been busting tires in the rocks. The ones I have on now are Coopers, busted two in the last month.Have ran Toyo's but no milage and noisy. My main concern is they have to hold up it the rocks.I must run 40% off road min.

BF Goodrich? The best tires I ever ran were Firestone with an aggressive tread, but I think the have changed the name/model of that tire to the Destination M2. So, I don't know how the newer Firestones work. The next best tires I had were Nitto Terra Graplper AT's. I got almost 60K out of them.

But, the only rocks we have are on old rail road beds. Coopers have a bad reputation in my area.

I run a Ram 3500 diesel ,I've had good success with Cooper ST Maxx on pavement, gravel, mud and snow, no rock experience, but they get great mileage for me at 75,000km.
Also did well with BFG mud terrains, Toyo mud terrains I found noisy, and heavy, my mileage dove significantly.

I've run most of the big name tires, the toyos were my least favorite. One I never did try was the Nitto trail grappler, looks good. Always liked the look of some of the Yokohamas, likely going to put those on my wifes FJ when her BFG MTs run out, she wants something quiet.

Im running the cooper stt pro and do a lot of off roading and been good so far. Looking like ill get about 50k out of the tread.

I run Toyo Open Country R/T 12 ply tires on my Ram 2500 Longhorn. Aggressive for off-road use, but not as bad as a mud tire so they run good on the highway too.

Haven’t had a flat running 10 ply tires previous trucks and these 12 ply Toyos on my new truck are even tougher yet.

I've been using Goodyear wrangler duratracs on my Tacoma. Goes good in the snow and mud here in Pa. and don't buzz to bad on the highway.

i also ran Goodyear DuraTracs on my 2500HD GMC, ...loved them compared to anything else i ran , and there were alot over the years.

previously had F150 then ranger. I was never happy till i put on the DuraTracks, never ran the open countrys above but they sure look sweet!

What type of vehicle? When the Coopers failed was it through the tread or in the sidewall? Were you able to submit for warranty replacement?

Rocks are tough on tires.. not knowing where you are some places are worse than others. In all cases a tough off-road tire for the rough use/abuse you suggest will not get good mileage or be quiet on the highway.

I have been running the Nitto Trail Grappler on my 2500HD Silverado. They are relatively quiet and have good traction in loose dirt, etc.

I have run Toyo M/T and now Hankook Dynapro M/T tires on my Landcruiser. I have done rock crawling type off roading with both of these tires and have no complaints. The Toyo is expensive which is why I went to the Hankook.

I have them siped for winter use on snow and ice. Otherwise they aren't too good in that department.

As more of a general reply, the Firestone Destination MT2 is a great option for a mud terrain tire. It's predecessor the MT wore like iron. I've had the GY Duratracs, those are good too, kind of like the Cooper line they are a middle of the pack performer. I currently have the Cooper ST Maxx on my Tundra and they have been fantastic, but heavy pickups tend to wear them out quicker.

Full discloser, I work in the tire business. 99% of my time is on commercial (semi truck, construction equip, etc.) but I've learned a few things about retail over the years.

I would suggest BFGoodrich, whichever is designed for your mix of terrain. Mud, sand, and gravel are all quite distinct from a tread design point of view, so if you spend most of your off-road miles in one or the other, you'll benefit from the right tire instead of just an "off road" tire.

BF Goodrich all terrain k02.
Kevlar reinforced, heavy as a train, noisy as a rock concert, fantastic in the snow and mud. expensive! Best off road tire I've run. I run them on a piece off crap Jeep I use for my shooting rig. Lots of cactus and mud. Toughest tire I've had.

More of a budget limited tough tire,10 ply Falken wildpeak at. 3 years 40k+, Montana,South Dakota, Wyoming trips. Not great snow or mud but rock, gravel, sage tough. On a F150, they do hold some gravel. I like Hankook but would go 10 ply.

I run a full service tire center. My question is: when you mention rock, do you mean gravel roads or larger rough cut stuff?
On gravel one of the most important features is stone ejectors. Most of the flats and damage we see is not caused by the initial rock (which gets stuck in the tread), but the second rock that pushes the first through.
For rough or larger rock you want to look for a tire with a chip resistant compound, steel body plys, and a three ply sidewall.
There are several tires out there that meet those criteria, I recommend matching a tire to your needs and then purchasing it from someone you trust with good warranties. It's difficult to get warranties form the internet. Plus, a reputable dealer will give you free service warranties (rotates, balances, flats, and road hazard).
Hope that helps.
