Who can cut down a MDT steel AICS magazine

I'm wanting to have a 5 round magazine for my XM defiance action. Unfortunately, no one makes one. Does anyone know of a Gunsmith who cuts down the Standard MDT Mag?

There is someone that does it but for the life of me I cannot remember who. Someone else asked a few days ago and that set my mind to working on it. If I figure it out I'll be back and let you know. It wasn't cheap but I don't recall the cost either. I've pondered setting up to do it but haven't the time and probably won't till I need one for myself.

Edit: Found them https://kinportpeakrifles.com/
They have in the past modified the 10rnd down to 4. Don't see why they wouldn't do 5.

What caliber and action length?
He has a Defiance XM. MDT only makes a 10rnd for std and mag and that is the problem everyone has that wants a detachable mag in the XM. It’s the only thing available and in a hunting rifle it’s too long.
MDT makes several 5 round mags...
Not in an XM length. You are stuck with a 10. There’s been lots of noise about 5’s for quite some time but it hasn’t happened.

But will this one fit a XM bottom metal? The fact that no one makes a 5 round and only a 10 absolutely baffles me...

I started googling for them... I typed "xm length" and the auto-complete suggestion was "5 round mag"

So there's certainly some demand for them. I prefer 5rnd mags in bolt guns... I don't have a mid size / mag bottom feeder but I would think a shorter 5 round mag would be more the norm than a 10rnd.

Many years ago I cut down a ACIS 5 round to 3 on request of my father-in-law. It was the first and last all at the same time :). It was sectioned, Tig welded and cerakoted.

That’s an AICS pattern magazine, it will not fit XM length bottom metal.

Currently the only option is to take the 10rnd, disassemble it, blast it, section out a portion in the middle, TIG it back together, re-coat it and reassemble. That’s why it costs so much to have someone do one.
He asked for an aics mag. They make the long action and short action. It would depend on the mag opening in the bottom metal and not the action hole spacing if a slightly longer oal. If the XM has some special sizing besides a medium length action then Defiance will need to make different mags and bottom metal for it.

OP what bottom metal are you using?

That is precisely the problem (it is a special length) and Defiance doesn’t make anything (detachable bottom metal and magazines) for it. They’ve left it to the aftermarket.

He asked for a 5 round magazine for an XM length action, that is not an AICS. It’s well known that the XM length is a special breed that’s why it is referred to as a medium and not a short or a long. Seekins used to make bottom metal and magazines for them but quit making them quite some time ago so that leaves the MDT 10 round XM length mag and Hawkins bottom metal.

Surgeon used to make a medium action but it took standard short action bottom metal. Two friends had them. It was just able to accept longer rounds and the AICS 6.5 PRC mags can load to 2.955”. I will wait to see what bottom metal he is running.

The Kinportpeak is coming up as closed. I'm a pretty handy guy, however, I'm not going to cut up a $100 mag with my skillz ):
I can use the BDL bottom metal from Defiance as a last alternative. Just hoping there's a competent Smith out there that does this already.

Thinking out loud: APA makes a DBM XM length bottom metal and they were rumored to have taken over the rights to the Inflection mags. I sent an inquiry to see if they are ever going to do anything with it.

Well that was quick:

The Inquiry: Did you ever come up with or proceed with making any 3-5 round XM length magazines? Rumor had it you took over the rights from Inflection for their magazines.

The Reply: We are still working on that project and hope to have it done by the end of the year.

Thanks,
