considering varmit/hunting gun for grandson in 243
have a good deal on both a tikka t3 lite and a savage mod. 16
haven't delt with either of these brands......
which would you choose and why??????????????

IMHO, go with a Stevens or Savage. Lots of parts available and real easy to change calibers if you have a mind to. The Stevens will be less $$ than the Savage. No Accu Trigger but still a good shooter.

I would choose the Savage over the Tikka for accuracy. But, I would also go with a varmit model with a heavier barrel, again for accuracy.

I agree with Ron and Mike, go with the Savage! Look up the model 12 line on their website, I think you will be impressed. Alot of different models to choose from too :)!

Funny, that's the same problem I have building on a BAT action. And, my banker (my wife) is really getting T'd off.

I own Tikka's and Savages both. If I had to say which is best I'd ask what are the ground rules? No holds barred the Savage has more options if you're going to build on it. However, if you're leaving the rifle stock and just buying ammo off the shelf and limit it to that, I'd put my money on the Tikka for accuracy EVERY time. Like I said, I own both and love them both. I own 4 Tikka's and currently only two Savages but have owned many. One of my Tikka's is a 243 win, the caliber you speak of. Not perfect in my mind as I wish it had a different ROT but what bullets it's capable of shooting it shoots very well! I'll put it up against either one of my Savages any day of the week! So, take it for what it's worth. I'll probably get chewed up by somebody on here for not tooting the Savage horn loud enough but I have to say that I love my Tikka's too! Good luck!

Just like to say that choosing a 243 is a great idea. It's a superb long range varmint caliber and adequate for deer hunting with the proper bullets.

I've been shooting them since 1968 and love the caliber. I would look at the Remington Model 700 with a 24" barrel if you want an all around rifle for varmints and deer. If just for varmints, I'd go for the heavy barrel in 26" length.

Dont think you can go wrong with either gun. That said the savage would serve you well. Also i would pick the tikka but only because i have 2 savages already.

thanks for all the good gouge..... i appreciate your input.... next get will be a savage.....
i traded an ior scope for a custom built with a used overmold stock and a lilja barrel , new mod. 70 pre 64 action made by FN....... excellent gunsmith so i know it will shoot..... and i won't get it until it does......

I have a Savage Model 16 Stainless that has been switched over to TAC 20. Great gun highly accurate with very light recoil. It would be a great gun to consider for a young varmint hunter. More info if you like contact me.
