Which scope for long range target shooting?

I just bought a Savage LRPV in .223 with 7 twist that I plan on using with Berger 90 grain VLD's for long range steel and paper punching (out to 1000). Most of the scopes I currently own are variables in the 4-16 and 6-24 class. Would you put a variable on this gun or go with fixed magnification?

Which scope/reticle would you recommend that has enough magnification and elevation to reach 1000 without breaking the bank? Lets keep the budget at around $600 or under.

Thanks,

Dave

For the money, a fixed will give you more bang for the buck. You can use your variable 6-24 for starters. In your price range, I'd look at the Weaver T-24 & T36, and the Leupold competition FX series.

I have a Sightron 6-24 LR D and love it! It has a 100 MOA elevation and windage. For the price, I feel that this scope is truly hard to beat. Great glass, repeatable movement. The 8-32 version has 70 MOA of movement. Lighter than a Nightforce with parallel quality in the glass at half the cost, to me is a win win situation. It is certainly something to consider in choices.

I have that very same scope sitting in my safe. Perhaps I will mount it and give it a go.
