Which rings & bases for a Zeiss HD5?

I'm getting a Zeiss HD5 5-25x50 for my new Rem 700 7mm-08 build.

I've never really paid much attention to ring's/bases before because they were "just for a hunting rifle" Currently I have a Burris fulfield II 3-9x40 for hunting and a Simmons 6.5-20x50 for load development. I just switch them out as needed via Leupold quik release rings/bases. This has worked as well as could be expected but since I'm upgrading the rifle and the scope I figure I should do the same for the rings & bases especialy since I won't have to swap scopes back and forth any more.

What would you guys recommend and why?

Thanks

I have a few Zeiss scopes and use a variety of mounts. For my hunting rifles, I like a picatiny base with the Burris Signature Zee Rings. The inserts provide a solid hold and allow you to adjust the scope tube to get close to a zero without moving out of the optical center of the scope. I just mounted a Zeiss Z5 for a buddy today. He bought a Nighforce one-piece base and Leupold Mark 4 rings.

I have a Zeiss Conquest 6.5 - 20 x 50 MC on my .284 tactical. It rests on Burris Signature Zee Rings mounted on a picatinny rail. I've come to really appreciate the flexibility of the Burris Zee Rings with the Pos-align inserts and the sturdy hold they provide on the scope tube.
Where the MOA alignment on any base pushes you to the limits of your scope and you need something between 0 MOA and 20 MOA but 10 MOA doesn't meet your needs, the Pos-Align feature on the Burris Zee Rings opens up a whole new list of other possibilities.

I agree with FeMan and Lapua40X !! Nothing beats Burris Signature Zee Rings. The fact that you minimize stress on the scope tube and dont put any marks on it is very important to me; especially when you are shooting a March ! I got rid of all my Nightforce, Leupold and TPS rings and replaced them with Signature rings. Also shooting a 7mm-08 here in South Africa and like it very much; good luck with the project.

firstshot: Ditto to the above posts for the use of Burris Signature Zee rings, the only kind I buy.

It's a simple matter to keep a dedicated set of rings on a particular scope, and when wanting to remove it, just take out the 2 cross-bolt screws and slide the scope with rings attached off the Picatinney base. Later, slide it back on & there will be no sight-in required.

Thanks everyone for the quick responses!! Wow... this is one topic where I expected a bunch of different recommendations. To see the first five responses in a row come in for Burris Signature Z Rings is impressive.

I look a look at these out on the Burris site. http://www.burrisoptics.com/sigrings.html They look like they work like the Leupold quick release rings except they don't have the quick release lever and I really like that they have the inserts that protect the scope from scratches.

The Burris Signature site says the Sig rings fit "Weaver Style" bases. I already have a weaver style base mounted on my Rem 700 receiver. Is the "Weaver Style" the same thing as a Picatinney rail and does the cross bar on the Sig rings fit into the slots on the Weaver/Picatinney rail?

If so, it does work just like the Leupold quick release rings, which I have found do an excellent job of returning to zero if you change out scopes. I'm getting the Zeiss HD5 with a 5-25 zoom range so I don't have to switch out scopes between the range and hunting woods; however, I do have an Ultra-Dot red dot for fast acquisition up close work and it's good to know I'll be able to switch back and forth if I need to.

This question belongs in the Optics forum, not "Big Stuff".

The rings/bases questions get asked gazillions of times each year. Google search, and start reading. Do the math (to get proper height above bore, based on ALL the components) and choose accordingly.

The cross slits in the picatinny bases are wider than weaver bases. Weaver rings will work on picatinny bases but not vise versa. Just make sure you slide the rings all the way forward in the slot and you will be gtg.

As stated by 3 or 4 others burris sig. zee's are the only ones I buy anymore. I just put 4 scopes on my uncle rifles last week they all got burris sig. zee's. No ring marks on the expensive scopes plenty of adjustments in the inserts just seems to be the best way to go.

Thanks to all of you for your input. I will definitely be picking up a set of Zee's.

Thanks again

PS: sorry for posting this in the wrong forum. Just thought it went with my 7mm-08 build.

..

The "Optics" forum deals with items for sale not questions about selecting scope rings and bases for a high power rifle. "Big Stuff" includes 6.5x47, 6.5-284, 6.5x55, 7mm, 30 Cal and the OPs Rem 700 7mm-08 rifle qualifies as "Big Stuff" ... so let's not be too critical. ;D

+1

I'm not saying this is the case here with this post. Some guys here, and we all know who they are, get so critical about stuff that doesn't matter especially with the less experience people. Just give them a break we are all here to learn and have a good time. Over time they will figure out the program and put stuff in the correct topic areas.
