Which Reticule?

Personally, I like the NightForce CH3... It is a .088 dot... Tiny for precision, yet highly visible on target. After that I like the .125 dots most manufacturer's make. I do not like "busy" reticules>>>very distracting to me.. I like to SEE exactly where I am putting my crosshair..

Man is that a loaded question. Reticule choice is a very personal choice and in the end you need to look thru as many scopes as you can and make your own choice, as to what you prefer and works for you. This question will also bring out a lot of difference in opinions.

For me my choice in a target scope would never ever have anything whatsoever to do with a dot, I just hate them for target work. All of my scopes have crosshairs and no dots. I also like to see exactly were the crosshairs are, with a dot it is always in the way.

So see what I mean about a difference in opinions? ShootDots prefer's dots, me I hate them. Funny thing is we both are right in our choice for ourselves. Start looking thru scopes and you will find the one for you...

I'm trying to find a way to aim more precisely. I have crosshairs and have tried to hold the center of the bullseye or holding to one side of the white center square. My friends with dots center the dot on the bullseye. A fast accurate way to aim is my goal.

Your thoughts?

NP2DD from Nightforce. I like it because it does not clutter the target, offers precision sighting and a reference for "hold offs".

Of course ... there's a dot (actually 2 dots) in that reticle. "Dot" gonna make 'dem mad.

Terry, as Roland stated, it is what YOU like. ALL target scopes do what they are intending to do>>>it is how YOU perceive them. I have been shooting with scopes since I was 14 yrs. old and that was back about the Civil War! LOL!! Not really>>>just a LONG time ago. I have developed a preference for TINY dots as I pick them up optically on my target with great ease. You will simply have to peer thru several scopes to see what you like... You will find it!

Man do I understand wanting to be more precise in your aiming, it's a problem all target shooters have to deal with. I shoot mostly 1,000 yd F-Class but I do like a Long Range benchrest match when I can find them. The targets are different in F-Class and are all black in the scoring ring, so maybe that's why I don't like dots. They just ( for me at least ) get lost in the target, and I think ( read that "THINK" ) they obscure to much of the aiming spot I am trying to get that bullet too.

With the blue background of the Benchrest target the dot may be able to center itself in the X ring, now if that is the case that would be fine up until the time you need to hold off for the wind. With the dot you are then aiming at an area ( area that the dot covers) and not a spot like you are with a Crosshair. At any rate that's my plan and I'm sticking to it.

As and example if I am shooting and have everything pretty well centered up and then put a shot on the left line of the x ring, I know I need to come more to the center so I, depending on my wind call for the next shot, want to hold on the right side of the x ring. If I am using crosshairs I can line up right on that line pretty close the crosshairs themselves obscure a portion of the target but I can get very close to the ring itself, and that should bring me to center x ring ( hopefully). With the dot ( and once again this only speaks to me) the area that the dot covers is just to broad to make that on the line holding point.

Now with all of that said. Dots are very popular, I would imagine it is pretty much split between dots and crosshairs as to which is on which rifle on the line at any given time. The dot guys have something figured out as they win a lot of matches and have solved the above problem for them at least. In the end I think it just gets back to that personal choice thing...

I have 4 1k BR guns.....3 wear NF scopes and one leopold. Every one is different...and I don't care. honestly couldn't tell you which reticle is on which gun....just point and shoot!!!

Same here.

But as earlier stated, one size does not fit all. Try to get behind as many different reticles as you can until you find the one you like.

I have a Leupold 40x with a dot that I hold on the number 9 for precise aiming and a NF 8-32 with a cross that I hold on the upper right corner of the white square. It's faster to get to those point's then to try and center them in the middle of the x ring for me.

Well, Terry, Roland kinda hit the nail on the head. CaptainMal likes this one:

If you can't find enough scopes to look through in your area, at least take the time to look at as many as you can on the Internet. That way you can sort out the reticles that you think you might want to consider and try to find those in your area. It'll reduce the amount of shopping you have to do. Also, at the range, ask some of the guys what they're using and most of the time they'll invite you to take a peek.
