Which one of Bart's to shoot?

I just received some of Bart's Gungnirs and thought that I would give them a try in my old BAT. Today's conditions were not perfect (bright sun & gusty winds up to 10 MPH) but I decided to try the Gungnirs and also the Hammers. All of the bullets were seated .006" into the lands and I used 2 primers (already had some cases prepared with each). All groups were 3-shot at 200 yards and I started with 30.0 grains of H4895 (a mixture of 2 lots)/The Gungnirs & CCI 400 primers. The group was vertical and measured .210" (bottom left). The second group was with 30.0 gr. H4895 and 205M primers/Hamers at +.006". It measured .214 (upper left). #3 was 30.4 gr. H4895 (mix)/ Gungnirs and measured .290 (bottom right). The 4th group was a real eye-opener. It had 30.5 gr. of H4895/Fed. 205M and Hammers seated +.006. This is a replication of Bart's record-setting load (except primer) and I rough measured it at .058". This is amazing considering the wind and mirage. It may have been luck, but all of the groups were small. What did I learn..... the mixture of 2 lots of powder did not work as well as the pure lot. Both CCI and Federal primers shot well. Seating depth seemed good for both bullets. These were shot with my BAT/Leonard and a Lederer HV barrel w/.268 ND chambered in 6mm BRA.

Thank you Bart for these great bullets.....now which do I use? More testing needed. JamesDSCF9007 (2).JPG
I realize that the groups are probably larger than reported since they were range measured by measuring outside and subtracting .243. However they are exceptional groups considering the wind and mirage. James

James see if they repeat, wind blows them in as well as out..... jim
Jim, lately, I have been having trouble getting anything to shoot like I wanted. One of my problems may have been the wrong lot of powder. Also, the "nut" at the end of the stock often needed tightening. I am going to try the above loads at 600 yards on my next opportunity. Also, I need to find which primer works best. One thing that I have determined is that my loads may have been too hot for maximum accuracy. The Gungnirs are several "tenths" fatter than the Hammers and probably require less powder. I will determine the answer to these questions before our next 600 yard match. (hopefully).

James, are you going to be there for the 300 yd this weekend? I hope so. Enjoy talking with you and learning.
Keep em all in the 10.

My Gungnirs are are .2433 at the PR. I changed reamers and I lost the handle on everything but I'm clawing my way back but I had to slow way down. I guess the reamer determines the load, I dropped from 31.1 down to 30.7 of H4895. It hasn't been great to test hear we still had a frost the other night and I need 70-80 degree weather to dry if it will hold together up there.... I have a couple Lederers that seem pretty good..... keep trying James never settle for have, keep shooting smaller..... jim

Jim what in particular about the reamer change do you think made the difference? Freebore length or diameter maybe? Just curious...

Well I wish I knew what happen but the only thing that was to change was a .268 neck from .266 and free bore diameter went from .2435 to .2438. I'm down about a half a gr. of H4895 to get anything to work. I don't think this is a .115 free bore though, I'm about.010 shorter at touch. I may get a chance to put it on an optical comparator and see. It shoots very slow, but it seems to very good. I using everything from the same lots as I did before......... jim

Shot Hammers in a straight 6br this past Saturday out to 600 yards. Best groups I have ever shot. 30 grains of Varget kissing the lands and CCI 450’s. Still need to play with this load to squeeze the most out of it.

how good were the groups, I shot my first match with hammers at the last match and got 4 shots into a sub inch group and noticed on 3 of the 4 targets that the shots were in clumps, different clumps, but nice clumps. im using 30.6 gr of varget and also just touching the lands with br4's. just curious how yours is grouping with the similar loading;) bryant. oh yeah, our range is 654 yrds

I ran 30.6 in a 6BR at the Nationals very cool dense air. If it’s stating to warm up in your part of the country you might be getting a little hot.

New gun and new to the 600 yard game. I was happy to setup and shoot a 2.5 inch group first 5 shots at 600 with the gun. More work to do.

My decision as to which Bart's to shoot became easier when I found that if the Hammer didn't make contact in the lands without being too far out of the case mouth the Gungnir would work well in that barrel.
Yup, I shoot them both. I have honestly have found them to be equally accurate. Gungnirs get ab out .2 grain less powder than Hammers.
