Which McMillan For A Varmint Rifle

I am kicking around the idea of either a 22BR or 6BR, maybe a 6 Dasher or BRA for 0-400 yard varmint work. I plan to run 55-70s in either caliber and shoot from a field bench or prone. I would like to use a contour in the neighborhood of an MTU, M24, #8, or #9 finished at 26". It will be built on a Pierce SA single shot. I really like McMillan stocks so have been looking at options from them. The two stocks I'm looking at are the A3 and the Varmint. Are there other suggestions I should check out and consider? Thank you

My all time favorite varmint rifles were the nesika bay varmint stock. Right bolt, left port, no eject single shot. I used mostly Bat S actions. Heavy varmint contour, 24" or less. Zero freebore 6 dasher or BRA with 55s at close to 4000 fps. Out to 400 you cant beat it. The left load no eject single shot coned bolt was the way to go. No lost brass and you could still shoot fast enough to overheat the barrel.

Do you know if the current McMillan Varmint stock that’s available still is close to the Nesika Bay Varmint? This is what I’m leaning towards. Thank you!

For those barrel contours and a 26" length, I would choose the A3.
I think the Varmint stock is best suited for short barrels.

After building on many of the variations of stock designs used for shooting varmints, I have arrived at this configuration:

McMillan MBR

Left Bolt, Left Port and Drop Port single shot. Yes I'm right handed.

Like Jud96, I prefer either the MTU or sometimes I like the Hunter Class contour.

6 Dasher with the 105 AMAX or the 110 A-Tip

8 foot banquet table with front rests. Two of us shoot, one on each end.

The places I shoot on private property (large ranches) usually have distances of 600 - 700 yards. This is out in the middle of nowhere and there are some places where 1,000 yard shots are possible. That's when we bring out the heavy artillery!

I’ve looked at the MBR but I feel it might be too big for what I’m doing. Maybe not.

I have an A3 and it is not the most user friendly with a rest. To me the forend is too high and too narrow, and adding a plate just makes it higher. And if this is only to be shot off of a bench I would not want the butt hook. I am not really sure why anyone would want the butt hook, but they say its a sniper thing, and I ain't.

For the barrel contours you are wanting to use, and wanting to use a front rest, the Hunter Class Benchrest stock makes a good choice. Add a removable front stud if you want the option of shooting off a bipod or bags. I've shot a couple of them in the dog towns for 30 years.

This is good to know. I’m not into the “tacticool” stocks. I really like the Game Scout and Game Hunter from McMillan but I don’t think I can fit the barrel contour I want to use in the Game Hunter and definitely not in the Game Scout.

The MBR is a little big and to some feels a little clunky. Personal handling of any stock appeals to my decision making for just that reason. What might look nice and bag friendly can often change my mind after picking one model up. Go with the choice which feels best and makes sense to you.

The barrel contour you want to use will fit a Game Hunter stock. A Game Warden is the same as a Game Scout except with a larger forend. Those contours will fit a Game Warden. I have a Game Warden with a contour similar to a Heavy Palma in it.

An A3 stock has a wider forend than any of those. There is no butt hook on an A3.

Do you have any pictures of your rifle with the Game Warden and that contour barrel? Thank you

No I don't but the forend doesn't look over stuffed. My barrel is a Krieger Heavy Palma except with a 1.030" diameter neck and the muzzle diameter is .900" at 26".

For a reference, this is my 6BR in the McMillan Varmint pattern stock, 24" barrel:

The two that I like best are the HBR, as mentioned above, and the Winchester Marksman pattern which may be similar to their Varmint pattern, don't know. Some folks like the Sako Varmint pattern, too. Good luck with your project, and I would recommend the 6mm choices for what you are intending, just lots more options, and go with 8 twist.
