Which Magazine Box, Spring, and Follower for 284 BDL

I’m going to build a 284 Winchester on a Remington 700 Long Action with the hinged floorplate.

From my internet research, the standard Remington Long action magazine box and spring seem to work as well as anything. I have also read that the 30-06 follower works well.

Can some of you experienced 284 users please confirm that these are the correct components for the build?

If something works better, please point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance!

I built mine on a Rem 700 Sendero II action that started out as a 25-06, all I needed to do was tweak the feed lips on the mag box. The follower, spring and bolt all functioned perfectly. The case is quite larger than ‘06 size, yours MIGHT feed just fine as is, mine hung up feeding from the left side of the mag and requires some adjustment. It was suggested to me to alleviate and polish the feed ramp on the left side, but I found the feed lip alteration did the trick without touching the feed ramp.

Hope your build goes smoothly, mine was pretty straight forward.

Cheers.

I have shot the barrels out of several 284s that I used for tactical shooting. When I was shooting there wasn't a really good high cap mag for a long action and the ones out there were expensive so I stayed with the BDL set up. I used the 06 follower and it worked fine. Now however I have switched over to the Magpaul set up. It is fantastic and cheap!! It feeds like glass and I love it. I have converted all of my rifles to this set up. You can buy it with a mag for like $65!!! If you go this route get the one for the long action magnums. You can't beat it for hunting in my opinion.....

My 284 started life as a Rem 700 chambered in 270 Winchester. No modifications were made to the spring, follower, or magazine. Round loads and ejects flawlessly just as they did when it was a 270. Make sure that your gunsmith has a reamer with a throat long enough for you to be able to use the long action. A friend of mine had one done by someone else and his Smith used a reamer designed for a short action. He can only load his rounds to around 2.900 which basically turned the case into a 7mm-08. I shoot 145 Barnes LRX out of my 284 hunting rifle with an OAL of 3.110, 53GR of RL16 and get 3,100 FPS with my 26" Bartlein barrel. She's a shooter too.

That isn't a completely correct statement on the SA 284 coal at 2.900. The 284 win at 2.900 can easily be loaded to 2950+ with 162 amax bullets. You'll never see even close to that in a 7-08 loaded to any coal. You may want to take a look at the capacity of both cases. The 284 has the same capacity as the long case 280. It definitely helps using a long action for heavy bullets but for the 160 class, the short action works very very well and delivers over 3000 fps easily.

I'm not sure what powder you're using or what length barrel but my results are 2950 FPS with a 160 Accubond using 56gr RL16 and loading to to 3.150. You must have a really fast or really long barrel. We've been shooting the 284 for years and I even had one in a model 7 which I could only load it to 2.850 and it had a 24" barrel and I was only getting 2,745 with a 160 before I seen pressure. I am also shooting at 300 ft above sea level on the east coast where it's very humid so we cant get as fast as high elevations with low humidity

Using 53.5 grains RL17. COAL is 2.9. Barrel is 25". 162 amax. 3000 fps. Elevation is 800'. You'll never get even close in a 7-08 with 162s regardless of how long you run them. Case capacity is much less than a 284. ( 7-08 = 52.2 grains vs 284 = 66.7 grains case capacity) Almost 15 grains difference is definitely not comparable. Regardless, the 284 in a short action definitely works very well. With today's powders and bullets, it's very impressive. Even at 2.8-2.9. Running my SA 284 at 2.975, it does as well as factory 7 mm mag loaded ammo.

Case capacity in grains doesn't matter if you are not factoring in pressure. You compared the 284 to the 7mm mag. 66 grs for the 284 to 82 grs in the 7mm mag. To quote you from earlier that's hardly comparable and the difference is greater between the 284 and 7mm mag. However we know that a 284 with modern powder can obchieve 7mm mag speeds even though it uses a lot less powder. It's because of how efficient the case is.
Running a case at 2.975 is hardly what anyone what consider a short action round, especially one that would feed out of a short action std magazine of 2.870.

Fun Fact: I have a 6.5/284 (24in) that was chambered with a short throat to accommodate the magazine box of the gun, likewise, my wife has a Model Seven .260 (22in) that is chambered standard by Remington at the factory. The .260 gets slightly faster velocities across all bullet weights. I since have rid myself of the junk 6.5/284 and have built it right in a long action with plenty of room to seat the bullet for optimum performance and now it surpasses her .260 as it should. Do it right the first time and find someone who knows what they are doing, especially with the .284 case!

I feed mine from a short action platform with the dbm. Accurate mags in short action are what I use. Yes you are correct the comparison is very close between the 7 Mag in the 284 when loaded long in the 284. I have a 7-08 that I load at about 2.95 and they're not even close to the 284 when loaded at 2.8. My quote was accurate between 284 and the 7 mm mag with Factory ammo. Lots of guys really think that going to a short action in a 284 is a handicap. It's simply my belief that that's not the case based on my experience.

Search for 284 tactical hunter online. It's in the 6mmbr.com site. He has a very similar rifle as mine and shoots the same platform. Very impressive and very realistic numbers.

I've read that post. Impressive stuff. We built a few guns for guys I believe just because of that post alone. We've been shooting the 284 or a variation of it for years. I've had 2 different 284's for F-Class and just won the WV regional F-Class 600 Open tournament shooting the 6.5-284. 591 with 20 X's. I also have the 284 Win in a 700 LA hunting gun that's currently in Colorado awaiting my arrival for a bear hunt that starts Saturday and I'm finishing up a Proof Research barreled 6.5-284 hunting gun with a Manners stock. The 284 was the original WSM. I love the short fat efficient cases

Good luck on that Bear hunt

I appreciate the info. It sounds like I should be fine with the factory magazine box, spring, and follower. My gunsmith seems to think so too. So I guess that's the way that I will proceed.
