which favorite powder in the 220 Swift??

H414 has been my go to powder in the .220 Swift for over 20 years. IMR4064 works very well also but in my experience is slower velocity wise. I ran across a thread here this past summer about a forum member using 4007SSC in his Swift with great velocity and amazing accuracy. Certain lots of 4007 SSC have been recalled but I scored 4 pounds at a local gun shop not affected by the recall and tried some and am very impressed. Velocity is 3993 fps using a 55 Sierra BK jammed .005 and 42.0 grains of 4007 SSC. No pressure signs as well. My rifle sports a 28 inch cryo treated Brux HV barrel and I love it. I do have a load with H414 in this gun and 42.7 grains gets me 4009 fps with very good accuracy. I have had it up to 43.0 and 4046 fps. Start around 42.0 of H414 and work up!

H414 for me as well with 55 grain ballistic tips, worked in both my swifts. My longest running coyote kill to date at 357 yards was with that combo.

Shot a zillion swift rounds.....by far my favorite prairie dog caliber, and I've tried about everything.
No use having a swift if you like .223 velocities, been through a swift barrel or two or maybe several.....Should be able to sizzle a crossed the crony north of 4000 with a 50 or 55 grain and still maintain an acceptable level of safety all the while shooting tiny little groups, and I mean tiny (5 shot) at a 100......load it up with:
H380
AA2700
IMR4064
If your swift won't shoot with one of the above propellants, I'd suspect it may never shoot......but then again.

By the way Swift barrels last way longer then some may lead to believe.

Ditto everything . but I'll add RL15 powder . Purpose of my guns is to deliver extreme accuracy and have fun shooting.if i shoot it out and the accuracy drops off. It's just a barrel, I can get another one

My favorite powder for the Swift is what ever the rifle likes best.;) From the mid 1970's to the mid 1990's I used nothing but 4064 and was a happy chuck hunter. The Swift that I have now strongly prefers WW760 with the 50-55gr bullets. It shoots well also with N550 and H414. And it has shown some promise with R-17, but I have not finished load development on that one just yet.

I use Norma or Winchester brass and Rem 9 1/2 primers.

After reading all this, especially 40xGuy's review, I may knock the dust off that 4007 container I have in the room and check it out too.

Lastly, I agree with the post above that while the Swift might have a reputation of being a barrel burner, it is NOT as bad as has been stated, and there are others out there that are far worse. JME. Enjoy your Swift, it is a great round. WD

This may sound odd, but I used a LOT of IMR 3031 and 52 gr. BTHPs of my making in my Swift. If I could even see the groundhog it was dead.. . .

Loaded for a friends sporter Rem 700 classic produced one year in the early 90's. Had the action glass bedded that's all. This thing shot sub quarter inch 3-shot groups at 200, 250, and 300 yards while testing these 2 loads. 37.5 gr IMR 4064 with a Sierra 55 SBT and a CCI BR 2 and 38.8 gr RL 15 with a 52 gr AMAX with a FED 210 M. I wouldn't have believed it if I wasn't there.

Yote hunter, I owned exact same rifle during mid 90's and mine shot tiny groups also. I actually shot biggest buck of my life using this rifle. One shot to neck and DRT. 55 Nosler BT's over a stout charge of H414. Gun would shoot very small at 100. I'm still kicking myself for getting rid of this rifle.

40X Guy, I believe these limited run rifles got the premium parts. Everyone I have been around shot way better than average. The Reloader 15 and IMR 4064 loads listed above were not speed demons but they sure did shoot. The 4064 load was around 3400fps and the Reloader 15 load was 3520 fps. H 414 always gave me some of the fastest speeds and great accuracy in my 22-250 Ackley with 55 gr bullets, which is comparable to the swift in powder capacity. Only problem is that it is temperature sensitive. I still shot it for groundhog hunting and accounted for many many 1 shot kills at 500 -741 yards with 55 grainers.

SURE WISH I HAD MY 220 SWIFT 700 CLASSIC BACK IN MY SAFE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4064 shot well but I hate the way it meters. My gun found a happy place with H414 when shooting 55 grainers. H380 is really good too and really shines with 50 grain pills.
