which die?

hey men, i need a neck sizing die for my 6 br. i was looking at either at the redding comp. or just the plain type s. all opinions will be appreciated. thanks, SPM

Get one of Harrells FL bushing dies by sending them a few fired cases and $70.00 and you'll be in great shape for loading your 6br cases as good as they'll ever get.....

I like Redding products a lot, but if those won't suit your needs go to the Harrell custom solution:

or contact Neal Jones via:

Redding or Harrell's FL-sizing die with bushings will give you flexibility to adjust neck tension.

Once you've determined the ideal neck tension for your preferred bullet, I personally prefer non-bushing FL dies with the neck cut or honed to provide that setting exactly. Non-bushing FL dies with neck diameter set to your specs are available from Forster Products,$10 plus s/h on top of price of FL die), from Hornady Custom Shop, about $85.00), and from CH4D.com,$85-120 depending on die size). Hornady and CH4D will also cut the body of the die to your specs--either from a reamer print or fired brass you send in.

Men I'm new at this so steer me straight, I thought you didn't have to full length size the cases every firing, therefore I was going to get two different dies, one for neck only and one for the body only, no? Thanks again, SPM

Catshooter is right that many people "oversize" their brass. You just need to learn how to properly adjust the FL die to bump the shoulder only .001-.002 vs the guys who push it back .010.

you can have the best of both worlds though. You can use a neck only die and a Redding body bump die for body only. After 3-4x firings you will normally find that you need to bump the shoulder back. Plus many accuracy shooters find that with a correctly sized die and minimal shoulder bump, they get better accuracy vs neck only.

You can also send a Redding body bump die to Jim Carstenson of JLC Precision, vendor on this board, look under Tools) along with 10 2x fired cases. He will custom hone the body bump die to exactly fit your chamber and then modify the body die to be FL size with neck bushings. Last one he did for me was about $70 and turn around was less than 2 wks door to door. Either that or the Harrels option is the best and smart way to go IMO.

go to Harrels and explain your use for the 6BR and they will make you the correct die for your usage

By explain your usage I mean is it for BR is it for hunting etc- what chamber do you have, no turn, min turn or BR turn?

The harrels brothers are making me a sizing die to suit my no turn 272 neck chamber use for varmint hunting and magazine functioning. it has slightly different criteria than a die made for BR purposes and will slightly size the brass morein some areas than others to garrantee chambering and functioning from a magazine V's being used in a single shot BR rifle.

also that it's being used on a progressive press V's a single stage might make a differance to how they make it for me as well-

I dont know but I explained to them my set up and they are building my die to suit once my brass arrives at their workshop

Thanks a lot fellas, it seems my best bet is to call Harrels. There is just so many options, to a newb like myself it all looks like a blur. I appreciate it, SPM

SPM,
You may want to talk to Neil at Custom Products. www.neiljones.com
You should be bumping your shoulder back every time. Not just when it gets tight. If you wait until then, it can be harder on the brass. If you do it every time, you will be more consistent and have less problems in the future.
Good luck
