Which comparator insert.

Guys i generally use the 350 bushing for 6.5 Grendel and have been using the 400 bushing for 308, 270, 30-06 for years. But tonight I was setting up a 6.5-06 Redding body/shoulder bump die and tried to settle in on my desired headspace. Then for experimentation I tried the 375 bushing and was getting much more uniform measurements on my complete cartridges and for cases fresh out of the body die. I realize it is a comparator that is built more for comparing and setting up your own loads and that it is not necessarily a precision instrument. It's mainly used to make sure your ammo will headspace correctly in your chosen platform. I'd just like to hear which bushing you guys are using for 30/06, 308, 270, 65/06, or 25/06?

The back of the package for Hornady comparators list which one should be used for which cartridges.

I understand we are only looking for a relative number here but after trying both the Hornady L & L (aluminum - inserts) vs. the Sinclair (stainless steel - inserts) I find the Sinclair gives a more consistent reading.

I appreciate the answers guys, until lately I was only measuring Grendel and 308 and using the correct bushing for both. When I started with 270, 30-06, and 65-06 my packaging was long gone and I assumed incorrectly that 400 would be fine. From now on, 375 it is. Thanks again for all the posts and instructions.

On the SAC website, they state that their bullet comparators are made from SS. Does anyone know if the headspace ones are also or aluminum like the Hornady ones? They also reference their Datum Gauges but a search of that name on their website produces no hits.

As long as it fits somewhere on the shoulder, it really doesn't matter if it's the "correct" one. It's just a datum line.
I mostly agree with this apart from the .223Rem/5.56. The Hornady bushing is really close to the case body and I've wondered if that's the best place to measure?

Sorry for any thread deviation. I realize the cartridge discussed is not the same.

The SAC headspace comparator inserts are stainless. The comparator body that attaches to your caliper in aluminum.

The Hornady bushing is the same diameter as the datum diameter per SAAMI.

I always use the diameter specified by SAAMI for the datum line. Agree with everything else everyone said. But I have found the Whidden gauges are the most accurate for me. Drop in a headspace GO gauge and the Whidden will read ZERO.
