Which class for a newbe with a new Savage 12bvss in .308

Hi there, I am an old fart (60) who is new to centerfire. I bought the .308 because it is such a good all round cartridge. I am interested in a little local competition but have no idea as to what the classes are. I would like to keep my gun stock and compete with others who are using their shooting and reloading skills and not spending mega $ to try for a world record. I have less than 250 rounds total centerfire experience and I have already found some handloads that will shoot 5 shot repeatable sub .5 MOA groups @ 100 meters. I hope to get much better with time, practice, and the wisdom of the experts here. I think I would be willing to shoot out to 600 yards but will probably start off closer. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Valkrider

Hi there,

From where I sit, 60 isn't looking very old, so we'll have none of the old fart stuff ;D

Anyway, F-class "FTR" is likely where you'd fit best. It is a sport shot prone at a bullseye target, and in the case of FTR, it is 308's and 223's only. A bipod, a good scope and a rear bag and you're off to the races.

I am up in Canada, so I can't make many specific suggestions where to get involved, but i can assure you that dropping by one of your local matches will be a great social and learning experience.

We have started a "sporter" class in Canadian F-Class to allow folks with unmodified factory rifles a chance to complete with what they own; I'm not sure if the they're doing it in your neck of the woods or not.

Give it a try! I guarantee you'll be hooked.
