which case for a 1000 yards

hello, I need help deciding which case to choose on improving for a thousand yards. I have just recently been bit by the long range shooting bug, I'm currently shooting 6mmbr with a 1 in 8 twist, and the 105 berger vld. I'm looking for a case either in a 6.5 or 6mm to shoot the 115 6mm or 142 6.5. My one concern is barrel life I cannot afford to change barrels every 1,000 shots in a 6.5-284. I was thinking of a 6x47 lapua or the 6.5 creedmore any suggestions or thoughts on that would be greatly appreciated. Also barrel length and rates of twist and estimated fps barrel life as well. Thanks bulldog284

6.5x55 with a .297 neck no turn

or

6.5x55 with .294 neck for turning.

I've considered the 6.5 swede there is a good selection of brass, i was hoping to get a case with more speed than the swede.

the next cartridge in speed is the 6.5 swede imp or 6.5 X 57 or 6.5wssm I think the 6xc with the newer bullets i.e. 111 dtac, plastic tip) will shoot inside the 6.5s out to well over 1000 yrds plus loading for the xc is cheaper than the 6.5s my next project will be a 6xc with a crossover stock that will be used for across the coarse and f-class matches.

I shoot my Standard, yes standard sweede with a .294 neck at 2950 fps all day and ever day if i could afford it :)

I have gotten the speed to around 3100 fps but your talking wickely hot and unwise load.

Thats pushing a 140 class match bullet too!

30 inch tue of course helps.

Brass is cheaper than the 6.5x.284. I shoot 2950 fps with coated Danzac, spelling) 140 bergers.

HELLO PEOPLE WAKE UP AND JOIN THE SWEDE REVOLUTION!

I have no overpressure, bras lasts long time.

Case: Lapua turned to 291 neck.
Powder: Vin N560 or Norma MRP and if you Must RL 22
Charge: 47.6 with N560
Primer: Wolf LR
Bullet: 140 Berger VLD's jamed .015 into rifling
Neck tension .002.

Ask Proteus-X or Beretta on the Hide if my gun shoots :)

The secret for the speed is the powder. I am going to give H4831sc another try, but Dam you don't need a 6.5x.284 for 3k speeds!

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKEEEEEEEEEEEEE
UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!

Calm day you can shoot a 6mmbr quite easily. JB has shot under 6 inches at 1k for 10 shots using his 6 BR.

A little more pop the 6x47 lapua is a nice compromise between the br and .243 win.

you start getting into the big 7's the recoil tends to deteriorate your position and tracking, remember if you shoot f-class no brakes.

A 6.5mm is good compromise between recoil and down range performance.

IF you could afford it a 6br on calm days and a 6.5 for windy days.

What is the difference in barrel life for a 6.5x55 imp. at 2950 fps. vs. 6.5x284 at 2950 fps.? Same bullet, same speed I think would = about same barrel life? True or not true? 260 rem is not as fast but barrel life is much better.

Hey Lynn; nothing beats the ole 6BR UNLESS,,,

It's a 6-DASHER!!! :)

I can't wait to try the new RL-17 with the new DTAC 111gr bullets from David Tubb. That should be a pretty awesome combo in the DASHER.

Depends on what powder you are using, what type of shooting you are doing etc.

I believe the 6.5x.284 1k barrel life is based on people using H4350 which is pretty fast compared to their case capacity.

Now you use a slower powder it will last longer, but foul more. Moly or a coated bullet with Dantac or Boron might reduce this issue, but alot of people shoot naked and the fouling really affects accucracy on long matches shooting naked.

I use VIN N560 in my swede which is more expensive than RL 22 or Norma MRP, but 4 lots of powder and all shot the same...very consistant lot to lot. So I'll live with the expense. The other two powders will work, but not much experience with Norma MRP yet.

Short answer is same barrel life as near same capacity and if you run same H4350 pretty close.
