Which bullet for 17 Fireball for coyotes ?

Which would you choose if both were driven at about 3750, 25 gr V-MAX or 25 gr HP both Hornady..... This is for coyotes under 250 yds.

Thanks

OK, so who makes a 25 gr soft point, or what are you calling a 25 gr soft point ?

Hunt,
I would consider the 25 gr Berger match hp and or the Hornady 25 gr hp to be about the best “over the counter” bullets for coyotes. Reasonably inexpensive and readily available. I have a pile of the old Berger 22 gr match “non-mef “ bullets. They are very hard to find though. Those are my fox Bullets. Just my opinion. Genco (Chappie Gennett in North Carolina) used to make a 22.5 gr soft point I believe, but he sold out to Reeds Custom Ammo in Oklahoma. Good luck.

I've used both and truthfully don't see much difference in terminal performance. If there is a slight edge in performance it might go to the Vmax. I'd try both and take the one with the best accuracy out of your rifle.

The best 17 bullet for coyotes WAS the 30gr Kindler Gold bullets. But last I heard they are no longer made. WD

25 gr Berger target bullet. There was a group buy on Saubier for Berger to make up a run of them since they were discontinued and every so often they come up in the classifieds.

As WyleWD posted, the 30KGs were a great bullet but no longer made. You could try Chan Nagel in Bonner's Ferry, Idaho. He's back to making 25s and 30s and a lot of guys use his for coyotes. In my experience with four 17 fireball barrels, the Kindlers and the Nagels accuracy was way better than any factory bullet including the Bergers.

Sorry, I misread your original post. I thought you had mentioned softpoint. Anyways I use Blackhole bullets 30gr flat base hollow point on coyotes in my .17-.204. In my .17 fireball I use the 25gr Blackhole bullets. They work great for me. Other guys use Chan Nagel’s with great results.

This parallels my experience with Chan`s bullets as well...

I had a .17 AH that just wouldn`t shoot for me, I bought some of Chan`s 20gr. TGV.024 if I remember correctly, and it brought that thing back to life.

I`m sold, as long as Chan`s making bullets, I`m buying...;)

I've found the Hornady 25 HP to be slightly less frangible than the VMax. Of the 2 the HP is my choice for coyotes and the VMax for rock chucks and squirrels. For either bullet on coyotes it comes down to putting it right behind the shoulder and keeping if off of hard bone. Bang flop!

Looks like I will be using the Hornady HP for now. I will communicate with Chan and Black Hole.....

Thanks all.....

I’ve had great results with the 25 VMAX in my 17 FB. I’m using I8208 powder, R-P case and Rem 7.5 primer for avg velocity of 3740. If you were to push them over 3800 they’d be too explosive and possibly splash IMO.

The gentleman who bought Todd Kindler's bullet making operation is up and running. I have no personal experience with coyotes but reading other forums, his 30 Golds work great on them.
I don't have a direct link to his posts on Saubier.com but he's posted his contact info in the Small Caliber Discussion Board under the thread "the guy who bought Todd Kindler's equipment".

He is building 23s right now.A picture was posted on Saubier of one of the first victims of his bullets. The gentlemen goes by CT17

This is certainly good news!
Wishing that gentleman all the best in his swaging endeavors!!!
I have enough of original 30s, but will surely be a future customer...

Looking forward to you fellas posting up some performance info on these bullets!

Like Hogpatrol, I have shot Todd Kinder's bullets. My 1in 9 likes 30 grain bullets. Todd's bullets were good, but the best bullet I ever used were the 30 grain Berger bullet with a large for caliber hollow point and a flat base. Discontinued a number of years ago. Flat out the most accurate bullets I ever shot groups with. My only zero groups. Fired from a factory barrel. Barrel is done and I am still looking unicorns.
