which brass For 6PPC

Lapua 220 Russian necked up or Norma 6PPC, gun has a .270 neck. Which one and why? Which has more or less case capacity? Thanks for your help?

It is my impression that pretty much all of the serious short range competition work is being done with the Lapua brass. I am not aware of significant capacity differences, and have both. The necks on the Norma are thinner, and if you are planning on turning them, and perhaps if not, a .270 chamber would probably give more clearance than would be desirable. When loading at the highest nodes, even though the heads of the latest Norma cases have been "double struck" to make their primer pockets as able to hold up under high pressures as well as the Lapua, above the head the brass may be slightly softer than the Lapua, which is the probable cause of relatively faster case growth at the highest pressures that has been reported. I don't load to the very highest node, and have to turn both brands for my .262 chamber. I find that I can get good results with either brand, but since I have a good supply of the Lapua .220 Russian cases, I probably won't be buying any more Norma for a while. I just got some to see what it was like.

Your choice may depend on what type of 6PPC rifle you have. I use neck turned Lapua brass in my custom benchrest rifles. I also have a Ruger Mk II V/T in 6PPC which has a .270 neck diameter chamber. To avoid neck turning for this factory rifle, I choose to shoot the Norma brass. The loaded neck diameter(unturned) of my Norma brass is approximately .266. I have had no issues with loose primer pockets with the newer Norma brass.
PS: You will have to neck turn Lapua brass for a .270 chamber.

Try them both. I did. Only after that will you know which one You prefer. Vicarious experience holds only mild value. :)

+1

Bet your rifle will prefer one over the other. WD

Send me a note on your rifle, chamber type, along with your intended use and I may be able to help you out.

I shoot Lapua, Sako, and formed brass made from PMC 7.62x39. Shockingly, the PMC brass shoots very tiny groups also. So, if you are into informal shooting for fun, you have another option. In the mid 80's, we ran out of Sako brass and I bought a set of RCBS form dies. Since then, I have made thousands of 22 and 6 PPC cases out of the PMC brass, which will shoot better than most people can read the wind. At most, there is about .035 max difference in group size between the small rifle primer and the large rifle primer.

I had a P. dog rifle set up in a Stolle panda in 6 PPC. After many thousands or hard rounds on the dog towns, I went through a load development since the leade had grown quite a bit. 12 of 5 shot groups agg'd .285 with various powder charges using my own 60g flat base bullets made off or J4 jackets.

If you like to play in the Winter months, forming the PPC brass is a hoot. PMC brass is as tough as Lapua in this caliber.

For longevity and best accuracy use Lapua. But try them both and see which one will work better in your rifle.

If you use "gold box" Lapua in a .270 necked chamber, you will need to turn the necks. I have a couple of SAKO 6PPC BR model rifles & found that I needed to turn the necks a little to get .002-.003" total clearance. You would be wise to measure chamber neck diameter, loaded round neck diameter & chamber OAL so that you know exactly what you want to end up with.
