Which 6 X 24 scope?

What 6 x 24 scope do you like for prairie dog shooting? Seems to be many choices and just trying to decide. Oh and I want a 1 inch tube only.

Thanks, John .

I feel you are really limiting yourself with a 1 inch tube. Most of the good scopes are 30MM tubes. The big advantage is more elevation in MOA. None of the 1 inch tubes except the Mark 4 Leupold has enough minutes in to click what I need. Matt

There is one excellent 1" tube scope in the range you're after, namely a Swarovski Z5 5-25. The optics are impeccable and they are single turn zero stop with 13.25 mins available. With a 200yd zero, that will take you past 700yds with most cartridges. I have the 3.5-18 version on my .280AI and am just getting the 5-25 brother for a new 6BR.

The only limitation may be budget.. ;-)

John,
I have ask..is there any price limitation on finding a scope? I'm not here to dissuade or promote any particular scope. But it seems to me that spending $1000 for a scope used to just shoot Prairie Dogs is a bit of OVERKILL. I mean there are literary a lot of scopes out there to choose from that'll produce ample sighting to shoot PD's and cost less $300. Now none of those scopes would ever produce what is needed for Benchrest shooting in competition.

Thanks for all the replies. Yea I've got a couple of high dollar scopes that I use for PD shooting and a few that are way less spendy that do a very good job. My particular wants here will sit on top of a .20 Practical so there won't be a huge need for elevation adjustments. I haven't bought a 6 x 24 in quite some time and wondered if any particular brands or models stood out. Been thinking about a Sightron as Iv'e heard good things about them.

I think you'll find the SII 6-24 1" to be pretty poor vs the SIII 6-24 30mm - IMHO.
John,
I have a couple of the Sightron S111 scopes in 6X24X50 and I think they are a really great scope for the money. Very clear, tract perfectly and always hold their zero. I have tried one of the Big Sky and one of the S11 scopes. Quickly sold the S11 and gave the Big Sky away. The S111 has a 30 MM but I would recommend it over the 1" tube scopes..I also have the Swarovski in 3.5X18X44 in a 1" tube and it is excellent. The Sightron S111 is hard to beat for the money...

Id try to find a weaver t24 or t36 or leupold br36x. Solid scopes, cheap price and way better glass than youre lookin at in the under $500 range

I don't think I would want any straight high power scope for hunting Prairie dogs. On days the mirage is too bad. I prefer a variable. You could probably find a used Leupold 6.5x20 for a decent price. It is just that most of the better scopes are 30MM tubes. The only difference would be that you need 30MM rings. I believe there are advantages to the 30MM tubes and that is why most good companies are building so many. Matt

It does look like in recent years most companies are putting more effort into 30mm scopes. I may have to look in that direction again. I do have a Weaver V16 on my .223 since the mid 90's and have killed a boatload of critters with it and it simply never changes point of impact. Very reliable scope for the money I gave.

Once again, thanks for the replies. John.

I started Bench Rest shooting about 10 years ago on a shoe string and bought a used Sightron SII 6-24. It had a paralax problem which Sightron promptly corrected for me and I used it successfully for a couple years. Next, N-F 12-42 . Then new gun, a 284 WIN BR.
Put the old 6-24 Sii on it and was amazed how good it worked! Then I replaced it with a SIII 10-50.

Do not underrate the SII 6-24!!! I think it is VERY good bang for the buck!

For PD shootin, It dont get any better than a 6-24 SII Sightron. Brilliant optics
w/ a lifetime warranty. Best bang for the $$$ invested. LDS

I agree with going with the sightron, i have no quorum with other brands, my buddy has a vortex hslr that has good glass, but we both agree that my sightron has a slight edge over his. ( both are 6-24). The only question i would ask is if you figure on using reticle for hold over or dialing?

I have an older Sightron SII 6-24x scope and love it on a sage rat killing Remington .223. I have a Sightron SIII 8-32x on a Cooper 20 Vartarg and while a better scope, it is too top heavy on that rifle and doesn't kill the rats any better. And it was twice the price.
