Where to buy color agents (dye) for bedding compunds

Who sells different color dye for tinting or adding color to epoxy bedding compounds...I know Brownells sells AcraGlass with dye, but I want to buy dye or stain separate from a kit..

They sell just the dye too. I've bought black from them before.

I haven't tried it yet but I bet you can just use the Rit brand dyes from Walmart or a hobby store too.

Some years ago, I bought from McMillan an assortment of all the dye colors that they used -- some 40 odd. They put them up in small containers similar to the size that Brownells uses. Don't remember what they charged, but wasn't a lot. Don't know for sure, but don't think Ritz dyes will work; needs to be specifically for epoxy.

If you are looking for black, I have used inletting black in the past. Can't help w/ the rest of the rainbow, though.

If you have a tattoo shop in the general area, they have a ton of different colors and they work well with Acraglas.

I bought color pigments made for fiberglass and epoxy from a marine supply house on the internet. Basic colors, Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Brown, Black and White. Mix or match to make what your need. A little goes a long way. I use popcycle sticks to mix my colors and hardeners or catalyst. Get them by the 100 from Michaels Store. I use recycled Chrystal light, pudding or fruit cups to mix up the bedding compound. West Marine sells their 104 Epoxy resin and their 204 or 205 hardener (one is fast curing and the other is slow curing. I also use West marine's polyester fillers. If you are going to use polyester resin make sure your methyl ethyl keytone hardner is fresh.

Hi all,
Stop at your local paint store with a hand full of small clear bottles and ask for a squirt of each tint.
Keep the tint sealed and it will last for decades and you will have enough for decades.

With care mixing of proportions..
Cosmetics MICA can be used to color epoxies and paints.. Go to Amazon and search for cosmetic Mica or epoxy coloring..
It is what gun candy and other pigments are made from

Gel coat. I was gluing this one in so I tried something a little different as it really did not matter how it came out. It definitely needs to be refined.blue.jpg

I suspect that the issue of tinting bedding is the need to use a product that doesn't soften or weaken it in the final setup.

I would be concerned about the desirability of any liquid product not specific to this work. Maybe the oxides used to color cement would be preferable.

I know this is an older thread, but gelcoat pigments work for epoxies, too. A white base (marintex) will give you pastel colors. Should be no more than 6-8% pigment by weight before you get adverse effects. A large fiberglass stock manufacturer buys their pigments from my work, too.

Chemically speaking there is a difference between pigments and dyes. When pigments are dispersed (ground into) resins at the proper quantity you'll have an opaque system, whereas, dyes are soluble in the resin and will yield a translucent system which one can see through.
