Hey guys,

We've added a new feature that will let AccurateShooter.com members plot their location on a map of North America. You can add a short message and a picture of yourself if you like.

In the future we can use this to show the locations of gun ranges, factory outlet stores etc. The map will zoom WAY in so you can see roads within a couple-mile radius.

Here is the test page: http://www.6mmbr.com/membermap.html

NOTE: Some users with Internet Explorer have found this page can freeze their computers when using non-current versions of IE. Be sure to save any work before giving it a try. It seems to work fine with Firefox, Safari and Opera 8.0+,earlier versions of Opera display the map but not the icons.) With all browsers, you'll need to have JAVA activated.

Note: For privacy, you can use a web Nickname or first name only if you prefer. An email is required, but we've found it will accept something like Joenospam@hotmail.com . You can also use one of the "disposable" email addresses Yahoo offers. If you do use a real email address you can send private messages to other guys on the map. Kind of cool.

Gunamonth...

Funny stuff. I'm not sure about Stiller's presence. I put in a few commercial vendors during testing. Early BETA did not require an email address. Maybe that's how Jerry fell off the map, now that email is mandatory.

For those guys who are "sandwiched" in with other shooters, you can click on the + and minus controls to zoom the map and make your area bigger.

Obviously this needs some further development, but I still think it's cool. We can put little pointers on places like Camp Perry and the Whittington Range. I'll just have to figure a way around the email requirement.,Hello, my name is C. Amp Perry, and my email is highpower@hotmail.com). :D

PS: I apologize, I deleted one of your paragraphs by accident trying to grab it for a quote. You were describing how the screen was not refreshing properly and you ended up entered three times.

It will be neat when the bugs all get worked out and the software works better for those outside the USA. After about 11pm Eastern time, the majority of site users are often from other countries. It will be impressive when we have hundreds of red "stickies" all over the globe.

It would be great if we could add ranges to this map. Using the Hybrid option,Satellite and map combined), I have looked at various ranges I have shot at, like Billings MT, Namaka AB, APRA, SPRA and others.

Sure would be nice to be able to mark these ranges on the map, by range name, i.e., the SPRA range is called the SPRA Northstar Range, and include what type of shooting association is used, i.e., DCRA, and the type of events shot, i.e., 300M-1200yd TR and F Class, and even the next event would be great too. Sure would make finding your next event easy, IMO. But depending on your range location, you may not get the highest magnification.

Thanks for the mapping options, I think it is way too cool!

I updated the location of my map marker using the Hybrid option and I had it actually on my house in Saskatoon, but I have moved this marker to the firing point of a range 1 mile from my house

The map/sat image is actually about 3 years old for my area, Saskatoon.

BTW, I used IE 6 and my OS on my laptop is ME. It worked fine for me. I think the issue with the other browsers is more of a java issue rather than a browser or OS issue.

Kodiak,

Thanks for the great feedback. It's too bad the Frappr site imposed the email requirement--otherwise it would be a snap to locate Ranges on the map.

Re IE, my machine locked up like no tomorrow and a couple other guys had problems. But I'm running ME, a fairly old OS, and I may not have the current Java code. It may be a java issue as you say, or a caching issue. Kory say it worked fine for him with IE 6.0 and XP Pro.

For the time being I felt I had to place the warning, because I don't want anyone to have to do a forced, depowering) shutdown. I've reported the issues to Frappr. Looks like they're an investment bank funded operation so I bet they get it worked out.

It will be really neat, and the ability to message anybody on the map is very attractive.

Mod,

You said... "It's too bad the Frappr site imposed the email requirement--otherwise it would be a snap to locate Ranges on the map" and "In the future we can use this to show the locations of gun ranges, factory outlet stores etc."

so following your same basic idea... and since I used your original link and joined your group, posting a pic of myself and my location, which I have changed from my house to a range I use for test a couple mile North of my house, for security reasons), and thus created a "My Frappe Account", I just created a new group on this same Frappr site and called it, TR and FClass LR Ranges,

http://www.frappr.com/trandfclasslrranges

Your group, Accurate Shooters, is a "general area map and pic site of the accurate shooters themselves", and this new one I created... I see this as a map and pic group/site for just that, prone type LR ranges.

Since frappr it is a beta site I think it is free now but they may charge in the future and I think, as a member of Frapper, you can join as many other groups as you like and create new groups, as I just did!

This way, we and others can create more groups faster, :comp: like Benchrest Ranges or Silhouette Ranges or whatever is your fancy, just as you said.

I sure hope this is free and will last and all our mapping of different range locations by type are solved. :thumb:

Maybe you might what to pin this thread and may be even rename it to "Maps of shooters themselves, shooting ranges, etc".

What do you think?

BTW, I managed to add myself three times to your map using three different email accounts. Once as myself, and twice as LR Ranges. This is how you can be many markers at once with different pics. To change identities, logon out and back in again with the other email account and password.

This is a great idea. However, after many years I had to finally convert to IE. Until IE will work, I guess I won't be adding another Minnesotan.

Hipshot,

About 2/3 of the guys who have tried it with IE say it works fine. But I and a few others did experience problems. This could be a software conflict with my anti-virus or memory management, or it could be that I'm running a vintage 2001 operating system.

I just wanted to make sure to warn people. You might want to give it a try--just save data and close other applications first to be safe.

I used XP and IE from work and this works fine too.

The Frappr site under FAQ says

"We test the site with Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 and Mozilla Firefox 1.0.7. Firefox on Mac and Safari on Mac seem to work. Not too sure about Opera. Internet Explorer for AOL doesn't seem to work well."

I have been a busy lad, adding more group maps for shooting events I compete in. Hopefully they will get more markers, the more the better :)

http://www.frappr.com/trandfclasslrranges For long range ranges
http://www.frappr.com/hbrranges For Hunter Benchrest ranges
http://www.frappr.com/shootingranges For any shooting range

Thanks for showing us this mapping tool Mod and for your original link...
http://www.frappr.com/accurateshooters For the shooters themselves

Keith,

How does one add a shooting site? The group map I started now requires an email address. Did you use a made-up email address or can you somehow place the ranges on a different map first and then transfer them?

----

Also, for other Forum Members who are reading this, if you put yourself on the map, add a "Shout-Out" message and a photo. It's a lot more interesting that way when somebody clicks on a marker.

You asked..."How does one add a shooting site? The group map I started now requires an email address. Did you use a made-up email address or can you somehow place the ranges on a different map first and then transfer them?"

To add a shooting site, marker) in another location from were you are on the Accurate Shooter's map, you have to use a different email address. If you click "Add myself", you appear as you do on Accurate Shooters. Using three email addresses, I have added myself to Accurate Shooters using one email address, me again as APRA with another, and me again as SPRA with the last email address. You can create as many email addresses as you like with hotmail.com.

Frappr has a limitation of one marker and pic per email account. To change your identity, logout and log back in as the other identity, email account) and password

Well mine added ok first try and looks like i am the first in Australia to add works all over the world and have added a photo.

UPDATE:

I've noticed two odd things. Now that we've passed 120 members, sometimes all the icons don't show up on the map displayed on our site page.

But, if you click on "Accurate Shooters" right above the map, it goes to a bigger Frappr-hosted map and more icons display. There is also a list of members on the right, where you'll find everybody.

I did that today and found a gent from Germany, two Brits, someone from Nova Scotia. Cool.

Also, for some reason, not all the photos that people have uploaded appear in the photo gallery. But, if you click on the "map this" tag near a person's name,in the list), his photo will appear next to his name on the big map.

Hi

I have joined and appear as a member but thereis no pointer to my location in Australia.

We've learned that the map which displays within our site is limited to 50 markers. Click on "Accurate Shooters" above the map and that will take you to a larger version. From there, in the lower left, you can tell it to display all icons. Or just use the list on the right.

Here's what came up when I clicked on your name on the big map.

mc4rqu.jpg

I know this is less than ideal, but the software IS in Beta and they seem to be adding new features every couple of days. Just today I was able to add range locations, which appear as blue markers.

It also seems that sometimes to see all the markers you need to refresh the page.
