Where did I go wrong? (Savage stock related)

I bought a nice Bell and Carlson stock for my Savage model 12, .243 Win short action rifle....but it doesn't fit. As best as I can tell the stock is 4.4" or so on the receiver screws and my rifle is 4 1/4". My long action 112 is about 5". What have I got and what do I need?

Thanks
Rock

The 4¼ is 4.275" which is a second generation Savage short action, this is what you have.
The 'Long' actions are all 5.062"
There has been a lot printed about various Savage action lengths in the short action. I have mentioned this before on this site. BEFORE ordering a custom Savage stock MEASURE the action hole spacing. Do not rely on serial numbers.
All YOU need to know is that you have a short action Savage with 4.275 hole spacing. The rest is just confusing and in the end you need your action and a ruler to know what you need.
Maybe the manufacturer will take it back.....I find it hard to believe a stock maker for Savage actions does not ask the hole spacing at least 3 times on the order form.

I bought this from an individual. My bad. Rookie mistake. It's a darn nice black with red spider Web tactical stock. Any takers?

Actually, it will probably fit my .308, which is at Savage right now.

What you have is the most common one out there compared to the new 4.4 incher on the latest rifles since around 2006 or so. Send it back and explain you ordered the wrong one. You need a stock for a staggered feed(magazine box is attached to the receiver) The 4.4 has the magazine fixed to the stock. Your center to center is 4.275 and all you need to know is which magazine you have and what contour your barrel is by measuring the diameter at the muzzle. Exactly which stock did you get?

Where did you buy it. Hopefully it is stocky's or something like that.

I think Houge makes a offset bushing . To convert a 4.44 to 4.27. You might try that. Tommy Mc..
