what's your limits?

my confidence is almost completely determined by the wind. if the wind is nearly zero I'm confident 2/3rds that I'll hit a coyote out to 960 yards. another limit. if I can get the damn range finder to range. Just wanted to hear others stories of limits. I shoot 123 a-maxes out of 6.5x47 lapua.

Am patient enough that in most instances, they will be close enough for #4 buck from a full choke. But, this is WI and most dogs in this state are not educated.

..I have a confirmed groundhog kill at 1,017 yards.

Leica LRF 1200 Rangefinder.

I have found that at "extreme ranges" = over 800 yards, if you miss high, most of the time a g'hog will let you shoot again!

..it is the low misses that typically spook them....

..AND YES, the wind is a HUGE factor....indeed

Confirmed (and witnessed) 1062 and 1017 yard groundhog kills. Also a confirmed 1025 yard kill by another long range shooter shooting my rifle. Near misses on groundhogs at 1250 and 1273 yards.

Going for a 2k prairie dog next summer.
Groundhogs or rock chucks would sure be preferable over pd's for their size though.

On varmints. Ill shoot at whatever distance and guess windage to improve my wind shooting skills. Use a leica 1600 lrf so extreme long range shots are very possible on big game like elk deer and antelope, but I never plan on shooting at big game past 800 yards. With a hunting rifle there are just way too many variables at shots past 800.

In hunting big game, there's no "sighter/barrel warmup" period before a record shot like in competition. Any of you who shoot 1000 yard br understand how much a rifle can sometimes be off from match to match even though you've touched nothing.

I've killed a lot of big game animals at long ranges. Farthest being 655 yards with 10-15 mph crosswind gusts on a mule deer buck and would have stalked closer if possible, but the situation just wouldn't allow it. Also shot an antelope doe at 643 yards in a 25-30 mph crosswind. Again because of the situation.

I always try to get as close as possible when hunting big game, but sometimes have to take long shots. I don't think ill ever attempt a shot past 800 yards though. Just not worth the risk of accidentally making a poor shot. So anything past 800 walks if Ican't get closer.

Heavy wind always makes me pause and think really hard about whether or not my experience will allow me to place the shot correctly at long range. I am definitely much more confident in my wind shooting skills when there is a constant breeze. It can be really tricky an much more risky when its gusting intermittently.

man I hate to miss high unless there is a very big back stop. I got to figure out how to read the wind better. don't have a kestrel yet but that's one of my next investments. better rangefinder is next. I've not hit anything but targets way out. they've not presented themselves either.
