What's your experience with ring dies curing "clicky" brass problem?

Looking for some actual experience on whether or not it works. I have some Dasher brass that is not behaving and I'm thinking about trying one of Pbike's dies if they work. Otherwise, new brass it is.

John Whidden is another option.

I did not know John made one. How does it work? Does it solve the problem?

I have a pBike ring die and it works as advertised. I have found, though, after many years of neck-sizing my competition brass, that getting a Harrell's (or other) custom full-length sizing die and full-length sizing every time that "click" is a thing of the past.

I use a ring die that I made for a 6.5x47 that I run on the warm side .... My experience with it is this , if it helps (in my case it does) then I use it every time I size my brass so as to treat the brass from a proactive standpoint.

I would use it on an individual basis for whatever caliber or rifle you are considering it.. You may get away with only having to use it every 2nd or 3rd firing depending how much expansion you are seeing from each firing.

For that particular rifle and load that I do use it for I need minimal resistance during working of the bolt for proper bag riding etc so that is where the ring die came in handy without having to get a custom set of FL dies made.

I use Harrel's dies and have different sizes of them as well. I had a barrel set back and I went with a different reamer when I did it. Evidently it was a little smaller at the base than the original. I was hoping I could keep using the same brass, but as it is now, that is not going to workout. Thanks for the replies.

Simply put it is a die that has no taper , shoulder area etc.. It is merely an opening that is designed to size the Web of your cases.

In example , if you required the Web of your brass to be .468" in order to chamber nicely then you would have a ring die that's entire internal dimension was .468"

Typically you will also require a modified she'll holder that allows the entire Web area of the case to go up into the die.

adding to that, and to provide a visual, it's the same idea as the 'pass through' dies for pistol cases. Like this:

I have one of Paul's dies I use for 6ppc. Works just as advertised.
The problem for me in a redding small base die it moved the shoulder to much. I tried 3 different Harrels dies.

The right way to do things is match the reamer to a sizing die as I've learned the hard way. But if you have what you have and need to make it work Pauls die will get it done

Re: What's your experience with rings dies curing "clicky" brass problem?

I'm still waiting on Paul to reply but the good news is my Forster FL die fixed the problem for now. Only bad thing about it is that it won't bump the shoulders. So, it's still a two pass system. It will however allow me to go to St. Louis this weekend if it rains between now and then.

Re: What's your experience with rings dies curing "clicky" brass problem?

I made one for my Dasher cases from an old Forster die I had laying around. It is able to pull down the base only down .001" more than what my Harrells die does. Seems to help. I also modified a shell holder that allows sizing all the way past the extraction groove. I run the case in this die as a second operation after FL sizing.

On this die, most of the body and shoulder has been bored out. I may make a plunger that fits into my shell holder slot to push the case all the way through. I'm sure I can get another .0005" sizing due to the little bit of taper left in the die. I may experiment and see what happens.

Not much to see, but here is mine...

I had no idea how much more sizing they needed to make them work but my Forster FL die sized them .0005" more than the Harrel's I initially used to size them and it cured them. I figured it would've taken more. I also found it odd that I could not measure a difference between the fired cases that clicked and the ones that didn't. I'll try a smaller Harrell's next time to see if it will do the job by itself.
