what's this on this bolt face?

If the headspace is correct , the cure for the front of the bolt face touching is pretty simple. I would simply turn a .001 off the face & try it with layout dye on it. Nail polish will do the same thing. You can also drag it across a flat stone from different directions a few times and achieve the same result. It really doesn't matter if it's off .0005. The big deal is that it's not touching.

So you mean machine bolt face rather then barrel? I guess a few thou can be removed before you start to hit extractor.

thanks for the input. i am not sure i have a problem. i put a slice of scotch tape on the bolt lugs that face towards and come close up to the end of the barrel. i reinstalled the bolt, operated the bolt several times and removed it and the tape was untouched. i believe the tape is about a .001" thick. i cleaned the face of the breech end of the barrel real well and took it out today with good conditions to test some of my known good loads at 100 yds. it shot very well, 5 shot groups in the .2's", .3's" and .4's."

i now believe the scoring on the face of the bolt came from my original screw up of trying to headspace it.

however, i did think about using some Flitz on the bolt where the scratching is to smooth things out. don't think it will do any harm at this point.

i also wish i could lighten up the bolt lift, which is heavy even with the bolt in the action but no barrel installed.
