What would you choose for a 600 yd. rifle?

I am often asked about my preferences for a long range rifle. I don't really know why they would ask me, but since I wrote for Precision Shooting Magazine for ten years, the folks know that I have I have tried many different "rigs". If I were to to build a rifle for 600 yard shooting today, I would choose the following (first and second choices listed). Action: BAT or Panda ; Stock: Leonard or Scarbrough; Barrel; Bartlein or Brux; Scope: Valdada or Nightforce; Bullets: Bart's or EPS (Eazor); Powder: Varget or H4895; Primer: Fed 205 or CCI 450; Case: Lapua 6 Br (no second choice). All of this is for my choice in chambering....the 6mm Dasher. What would you suggest? Thanks, James MockNew Range Record 004.JPG

Looks like a great rig to me. Good luck in your shooting with it. James

I do not know if you are speaking of Benchrest competition or F-Open, or something else. However, since I shoot F-Open, I will give you my 2cents worth. I would do either a B.A.T. "M" or a Panda F-Class, a Krieger 4 groove "Conventional" rifling barrel (1-8), Jewell / Bix and Andy whichever, Shehane Tracker Laminate wood stock and a Nightforce Competition Scope with a DDR-2 Reticle. My caliber of choice would be a .260A.I. WHY? So far I have had 4 / 6 Dashers and 2 / .260A.I.s. In each case I have found the .260A.I. to be every bit as accurate and just as easy to tune properly. A 140 class bullet at 2925-2950 with "regular" .260 Lapua Brass is a very good wind defying projectile! I have shot "more than a few" groups hovering around 1.5" at 600 yards. On my first .260A.I. barrel, shooting my "maiden voyage" 600 yard F-Open match with it, in the first match, I shot a 200-17X. Nothing really BIG about that! BUT what was B-I-G about that match was that ALL 17 of the "pasties", in the "X" ring, were so closely grouped together none of the pasties touched the circle-line of the "X" ring! That is accuracy! I have no way of telling just how small any one of any "5 shots" in that 17 shot group would have been inside an inch, if any. I don't know. What I do know is, I have never done that with ANY other of the cartridges I have shot at 600 with, including my Dashers, which I have used extensively at 600 yards.

F-open match, mid-range, 6-Dasher (NOT my target:rolleyes:), pending NRA record 200-22X:

(Shot during 2016 Louisiana F-class State Championship Match this October)

All of that sounds good. Maybe a 6BRX. or just a 6mmBR.

6br, easy on powder, barrels, & bankroll. Accurate to extremely accurate depending on how deep your pockets are.

Shoots high 1's at 100, 3/4" at 300. Going try some 600 yard next year.
