what would you buy in a sporter 308

If you were to buy a big game rifle in a 308win what would you buy and why.Im in need of a new hunting rifle but whos to know what is going to be acurate and whats going to end up being a lemon. All responses welcome and apreciated as always.

For the lowest cost I would get a Savage with the accutrigger. But it has been my finding that a Rem.700 right out of the box is about the most accurate rifle on average. Which ever rifle you get try some Nosler 125 Ballistic Tips at around 3000 fps for deer size game. I use 46 grs IMR 4895 in my custom Rem. 700 22 inch Heart barrel rifle. It is BANG FLOP.

Tikka
Comes floated and with adjustable trigger and detachable magazine so you can carry a spare in your pocket.
10 rounds on tap real quick if you need it.

I hate to be the one to poke the hornet nest, but I have a ruger M77 Mark 2 thats glass bedded only, and it shoots 1/2" 3 shots @ 100 quite often....had a PSS Rem.that wouldnt shoot with it, go figure!Alot of savage votes these days . look at the CZ,also Tikka.

What Ogrre6br said, If you buy one TIKKA, you will sell all others.

The action is so, so much smoother than a 700 action. You get a bigger bang for your buck with Tikka a than a Savage, Remington or a Ruger.

I have had three Rugers, They were ok but they were not great.

If I were looking, it would be in this order

1. Tikka
2. Savage
3. Remington
4. Ruger

I have to agree about the Tikka. I purchased a t3lite in a 300wsm last year and bore scoped it. The barrel looked so smooth you would think it was a custom. It shoots 1 inch groups at 200 yards very regularly with good ammo. I just purchased a cheap svage 12 fv 22-250 because it has a good trigger and the barrels are easily swappable. The bore isn't nearly as smooth, but so far it seems to shoot pretty good, just broke the barrel in last weekend. Remmy's are sweet shooters,I got a 30-06 that I can't complain about), but I do believe that you are paying some $ for the name.

I would buy a Remington 700 SPS,CM or Stainless), sell the factory plastic stock and put the barreled action in an H-S Precision stock or pillar bedded McMillan stock. And I'd expect, and probably get, consistently better than 0.75 MOA accuracy. The Remington 700 SPS is a really good rifle for the price. I have several, all with after market stocks installed, and all shoot great!

rem, howa, win, savage is pritty safe bet.economical shooters is the savage and howa.spendier is the rem and win but you cant really go wrong with any of the others that have been mentioned,But any 1 can be a lemon.

With a Rem 700 sporter, 49-52g of 748 with a 130g Barnes Tripple shock will shoot with the bullets all touching at 3100-3200 fps and there is no need for a heavier bullet until you go to hunting elk.

If you just want to shoot regular bullets, the the Sierra 125g Pro Hunter will do extremely well on deer at 3100-3200 fps shooting very tiny groups.

These light bullets in a 308 do not fly apart, so don't even think about it. I killed two bucks with the Sierra 135g Single shot pistol bullet in a 24" 308 loaded with 52.0g of 748. Both bucks died in their tracks and both 10 pointers went over 200 lbs. There is no need for tracking when you use these lighter bullets.

I bought a .308 CZ this week although with a Varmint heavy barrel. I have spent a lot of time on the boards, too much) the last two months before making a decision.

My conclusion, based upon filtering many threads and looking through the racks, is this:

Tikka T3's are loved by all. For a deer rifle and smooth bolt action it is a clear winner. The only hit is the Tikka rings.

Savage lovers are loyal and there can't be that many liars who routinely shoot 1/2 inch. Butt ugly although with accutrigger --loved.

CZ 550--Mauser action and controlled feed. Accuracy on par with both Tikka and Savage. Mine with polished blue and gray/black laminate stock is a beauty. The target sent with the rifle showed 1/4 inch one hole at 50M. The Savage side by side on the counter looks rough compared to the CZ.

Remington 700xx--not mentioned in the same out of box breath with the above.

Browning and Ruger---generally not mentioned in the same league as the above. Sad---Ruger has hammer forged barrels now too.

This is my impression only of course but represents some serious time on the blogs.

If it's going to be a bang it around, pulling it up a tree type true hunting rifle I'd get a synthetic stock Savage. Chances are it would be quite accurate and you're not going to depreciate it like you would a nice wooden stock. And my congradulations on your caliber 308. You're going to most likely get very good to great accuracy in most rifles. Even if you reload try this. Establish bullet seating for a 168g Matchking. Buy yourself a box of Federal Match Ammo with the 168g Sierra Matchking bullets. Take a kenetic bullet puller and knock the bullet most of the way out and re-seat it so that it will touch the lands of your rifling. Then get on bags and shoot a group. You'll be amazed. Oh, I know your hunting and not target shooting. The .308 168g Matchking is a bang flop on Whitetails. I've used it many many times and most of them hit the ground in their tracks with their insides mush.
