What would you build to compete here?

Here are the rules for my local club bench rest shoot...

Hunter Rifle matches the second Sunday of each month. The range is 200 yards. Sign ups start at 8 AM.

Sandbags and blocks are provided. A spotting scope is available for group use. Hearing and eye protection are required for both shooters and spectators.

Classes

Bolt; production and modified: 10 lbs max weight with scope. Shoot 10 shots for record at standard American target. Scope must be set no higher than 6x.

Varmint; production and modified: 11.5 lbs. max weight with any scope (any setting). Shoot 15 shots (5 shots ach at three targets) for record at match specific target.

Heavy Varmint: 13.5 lbs. max weight with any scope (any setting). Shoot 15 shots (5 shots ach at three targets) for record at match specific target.

I`m thinking about participating in the Heavy Varmint class....

What caliber and rifle components would you build to shoot in this class and make weight?????

I`m thinking 6BR and 80-95gr. bullets.....

What say`s the experts.

Phil.

If for score heavy varmit 30br if for group 6ppc, but if you do not reload then you would be best with 6br, if you reload both of them you have to turn necks and 30br you have to expand from 6br so it all depends what you can do or want to do, i would see what everyone is shooting in those three categories.

jo191145,

I`m not sure...

The rules i posted up top are the ONLY rules listed on the club`s site.

I am new to the club,so i have yet to attend as match and see for myself.

May`s match is going to be held on Mothers Day?????????????????

I`ll see if i can get away for 2hrs. or so and check things out.

The reason I asked is this sounds like a small clubs impromptu style bench shoot. Thats just fine, whatever the rules are one must abide ;)
But i've been caught with my pants down at such a match where there were no sighters and shooting at eggs. Very windy day, no paper, no flags.
Dang hard to have a group shootin gun and no paper to dial it in correctly for dead on POI ;D Learned my lesson there. Always ask about sighters.
Just because my PPC is shootin 1/2" high and left at my home range facing North you wait three days and shoot a range facing West with different terrain and Blammo, all bets are off.
The guy who shoots at that particular range frequently will be the winner usually. FWIW my PPC did win by one egg that day but it was a very dismal showing on my part.

One of the other egg comps I used to attend allowed unlimited sighters on paper prior to going hot. But no flags.
Those sighters were very beneficial in understanding the days weather patterns. Watch those leaves/grasses and when the bullet is dead on only shoot in those conditions from then on. A little foliage VooDoo was in order. Never try to dial the wind in small increments at short range without flags. You'll end up chasing your tail all day. Dial in the wind in your brain and hold accordingly.

Shooting at paper will be easier but you will need to stick to a strategy to come out on top. Sticking to a strategy can be the hardest part of these "not quite real" games.
Figuring out the correct strategy for any given game takes some expierience and thought. I recall from previous posts theres nothing wrong with your thinker so gather whatever knowledge you can and gain expierience. Good Luck

PS At 200 yd egg shoots I use my full custom 6PPC. When the eggs go to 300yds I use my Savage action Pac Nor barreled 14 twist 6BR with the same 68gn bullet. Don't let the action its built on get you believin it can't work. The only difference between the full custom PPC and Sav 6BR is 150 fps ;) Give me some foliage and paper to dial in and that Sav will bust an egg all day, egg after egg after egg. Now thats a fun game.
