What would you build to compete here?

Here are the rules for my local club bench rest shoot...

Hunter Rifle matches the second Sunday of each month. The range is 200 yards. Sign ups start at 8 AM.

Sandbags and blocks are provided. A spotting scope is available for group use. Hearing and eye protection are required for both shooters and spectators.

Classes

Bolt; production and modified: 10 lbs max weight with scope. Shoot 10 shots for record at standard American target. Scope must be set no higher than 6x.

Varmint; production and modified: 11.5 lbs. max weight with any scope (any setting). Shoot 15 shots (5 shots ach at three targets) for record at match specific target.

Heavy Varmint: 13.5 lbs. max weight with any scope (any setting). Shoot 15 shots (5 shots ach at three targets) for record at match specific target.

I`m thinking about participating in the Heavy Varmint class....

What caliber and rifle components would you build to shoot in this class and make weight?????

I`m thinking 6BR and 80-95gr. bullets.....

What say`s the experts.

Phil.

My son shoots mid range with 22br and it is a great cartridge to say the least. We have alot bench varmint for score at our club and 30br is top choice to cut more paper. They open the flash hole to get better ignition and say its very accurate. I prefer a round like 22br because it will give you a rifle that will perform other jobs if needed. We are using 90gr berger vld and it is flat accurate!

Mike,

That is why i am thinking about something in the 6mm arena...

I do understand the idea about the .30 cal. hole though....

The community sand bags are a great equalizer, I have dealt with this plenty and stock design will make or break you. I would go with wide flat front and parallel lines if allowed.

Two thoughts,

If you may plan to shoot competitively beyond this shoot, I'd look at what's available close by to shoot also, either Hunter Benchrest or Varmint for score matches, and build accordingly.

If VFS matches are close. I'd build a HV 30BR to IBS specs.

And if Hunter BR matches are within range, I'd do a legal 30x47 Hunter gun.

Alot could be said about the benefits of a local match. It's a great place to start in shooting, dive in and meet them on their terms. When you decide you have oats to sow, by then you will have a better idea which way you leave home.
