What velocity for 7mm Rem Mag?

Hey all,

I'm curious as to what velocity people are aiming for with their 7mm Rem Mag loads? I'm currently loading 162gr ELD-M's with H1000 and getting around 3000fps with 66gr and 3100fps with 68gr. Both loads group well but barrel wear is a consideration. I don't compete but like to shoot groups at 200-400 and steel at 800 yards plus.

Cheers for any input provided.

It all depends on your barrel nodes. I have a 28" krieger 5r with the 162 eldm and H1000 my low velocity node is at 2864 and shoots .75 at 300 and 1.5 at 500. My high node was at 3125 and was not quite as friendly on paper . I went with the low node for more barrel life .

I'm shooting 162 Hornady sst bullets at 3084 fps with 74.0 grs of Retumbo.... it shoots pretty good and has more killing energy that our 300 win mag.

Edit... we tested the 150 gr interlocks in the 300 win mag.... not heavier bullets.

I have seen several Remington 700's shoot 71g of Retumbo, 162g, fed 215, rem brass, touch the lands with the bullet shoot at 3130 fps with 26" bbls with amazing accuracy out of actions, pillar bedded, in laminate stocks, with a muzzle break of some kind.

R#25 will work very well right at the top end pressure node and seems to LOVE win mag primers in the two guns that I shoot with SD less than 10 fps.

Remington cases do not last long with these two loads above, but it is hunting. After load development, verify zero from time to time, then shots are on game.

Daniel is shooting a Sako T3 which has a much longer throat than Remington, thus takes more powder plus his lot # of powder is different than mine.

Work up to these loads in your rifle.

71-72gr of Retumbo has always given me great results in 7 Mag with 168 Bergers. Velocities are around 3050-3080 fps.

180 Berger Hybrids and 71gr of Retumbo give me 2974fps.

Thanks for the responses guys. Seems like a pretty decent spread velocity wise. My best results have been either jammed or around .030. I suppose one way to go would be to load the lower node for paper and higher node for longer ranges.

FWIW, I did get some decent results with Retumbo but switched to H1000 when I picked up an 8lb'er for a decent price.

Right there with you, just slightly less powder, 70gr retumbo for my 168’s and 69gr of retumbo for the 180’s.

I've used both H1000 and Retumbo in 7 Rem Mag with 168 gr Berger Classic Hunters, WW brass, WLRM primer, 26" barrel. The Retumbo give me a little more velocity (but maybe only 20 - 40 fps), however the H1000 is more consistent in ES and accuracy.
Somewhere between 3000 - 3050 fps you should find your velocity node (depending on your barrel length and your rifle).

I use H-1000 67.7 grs with a Winchester Mag Primer along with a 175 gr Berger Elite Hunter Bullet plus, Norma Brass. My velocity is 2887 FPS from my Remington 700 Krieger barrel 26" With 9.25 twist.

Huh? Ya gotta be just amazed with the seven fans, don'cha? And remember, "if the 7 don't do it forya, the next step is the 338". Hahahahaha, too funny!

Using a 26" 1:9 barrel, and various brass with CCI #34 primers, I'm getting 162-gr Hornady SST's b/n 2900-3000fps MV with 70.5 grains of H1000, and about 3100 fps with 71 grains.

Using IMR4831 and same bullet, got MV of about 3100fps with 67 grains, but there were signs of overpressure, so wont' be going that hot again. At 63.5 grains was averaging 2900fps, and with 65gr about 3000fps.

C.O.L. for all loads was at the recommended 3.290".

YMMV

I reload for my brothers Sendero. 71 gr H1000 168 gr Berger 3070fps mv. There are quite a few guns where we go shooting the exact same load. All are around 3050-3070.

My 300 win mag shooting 215 gr Berger hybrids would like to challenge the statement that a 7mm Rem mag slinging 162 SSTs has more ke.

I had a super accurate, 700 police rifle, that I was shooting 168 Berger, match bullets, using H1000, and was running about 2980. I had a faster load, but it wasn't as good as the slower node. Believe it or nor, that liad included Winchester WLR, standard primers. Had a .189 group at 200, the second time I tried it. That became my go to load. Hope this helps.

Bluetip, that's pretty amazing. I may have to try those 168's at some point. My gun is an Rem 700 Long Range. Still working on the factory barrel.
