What Varmint bullets for 8 twist?

Interested in hearing what Varmint bullets are working in your 1 to 8 twist in the 6mm . I have set up my XP for the 105's and 107's been thinking on something a little less weight for varminting without changing barrels.
Would enjoy hearing your replys and results.

Jim

In one of my 8 twist Dashers, I worked up two loads, one with the 95 VLD's, and the other with 70 grain Ballistic Tips.

I haven't hunted with the lighter weight yet, as the 95's do everything I need for coyotes.

You can go down in bullet weight and still get good accuracy far better than you can go up. Diffetent barrels act different so the only way to tell for sure is to load some and try them, there is a small chance you can go down to 70 gr. Use pointed boat tail bullets. Weight is reall not as critical as bullet lenth.

My Brux 8.5 twist is superb with the 85 gr sierra Boatail, resonable price and shoots very small groups with IMR 8208

im using the 87vmax out of a 243 behind H4350...really good combination..also like the previous post stated the seirra 85 varminter behind H4350...its a flat base bullet...shoots extremly well

the bergers are great...just be sure to use the varmint bullets if you plan on shooting any game with them...the target bullets preformed terrible for me on game...of course i should have known that but i had to atleast try it

If you are planning to shoot 105 to 107 bullets, I suggest the 105 AMax. Devastating on groundhogs from 50 to 1062 yards.

Bill-

I've heard too the A-Max come apart nicely on smaller stuff.

I just wonder how much the fast twist rate is an issue as well. My gunsmith was told by a keen shooter that his fast twist .22-250 shooting the same projectiles as his buddy's std twist .22-250 was noticeably more destructive despite the same MV.

What has been people's experience on that?

I shoot the 105 AMax out of a 6mmXC 28" 8 twist barrel at 3100 MV. No problems at all. A friend shoots the same bullet & twist, longer barrel, 243 wssm at 3250 MV. He has had a couple go 'poof'.
I have also tested the 105 AMax is a 6-284. Ran velocity up over 3300 fps with no issues.

The theory will support a faster twist being more destructive. In practice I'm not so sure...my 6br 8tw shooting 75 v-max was hitting rabbits and flicking them up into the air (300 - 400 yrds). Other trips using the same setup the 75 v-max was hitting them but not flicking them up, I suspect it has a lot to do with where the shot connects, even on small thin skinned light boned animals like rabbits.

The 105 A-max is wicked (out of a 6br) on rabbits as far out as you can hit them.

The 105 A Max is a great bullet and works well on varmints to deer. Mine likes the 107 SMK and I just use it for everything. I find the 107 to be a much tougher bullet on the tough side for varmints although it works fine. It is plenty tough for deer.

Jim,,,you will be pleasantly surprised with 65-68gr botique benchrest bullets....not only will they give you good expansion on thin skinned vermin ,,,the accuracy will be very pleasing,,,in pistol length bbls. try faster powders like 322 or even speed it up with 50% 4198,,,most of the nay sayers have never used the lil bullets,,I have shot thousands of em over the yrs,,Roger

I doubt you will find a better all around varmint bullet than the 87gr Vmax. It shoots great in every 6mm barrel that I have, even one that is 1-12tw. It is also about the cheapest you will find. My second choice coincidentally would be the 75gr Vmax for mostly the same reasons. The 87gr should have an advantage at longer ranges and in the wind though, but they both perform like you wouldn't believe. I also like the TNTs, and all of the Bergers, I just haven't noticed that the groundhogs can tell the difference, so until they do I will stay with the VMAX. The 58gr Vmax is pretty awesome out of a 1-12tw 6BR that I have as well, although I will usually only use it when the wind is a little slower or the ranges are shorter.

The OP stated in his first post that the barrel is an 8 twist and he set it up for 105 -107 grain bullets. Any bullet lighter than 80 grains has a good chance of going 'poof' if shot at near max velocities in his barrel.

I have a 6BR 8-twist that's chambered for 107 SMK's it shoots 62gr Barnes VG very well. I'm running them at 3450fps, the VG holds together and accuracy is acceptable for shooting ground squirrels, chucks and PD's.

i have had 2 brands of 105 gr bullets go 'poof' but never had anything lighter than an 85 go 'poof' in an 8 tw.

has anyone had failures with light bullets? [lets keep it around 4000]
