Looks like a grey rat snake to me. A very common, beneficial, non-venomous snake. I hope you weren't responsible for his "condition".
Can't say it was from me, It was in the road while walking the dog today. we do have 3 or 4 types of poisonous snake around the bluff's and around the river. I haven't seen too many grey snakes...that's what caught my attention.

It’s a grey rat snake. Very common in my area. Not sure why they call them a grey rat snake instead of grey bluebird snake. I used to always give them a free pass but after having them raid my bluebird houses and purple Martin houses many times I declared war. They get over 6 feet long and have gotten around some of my predator guards. I have a constant problem with rats in tractors and golf carts at my farm and the damn snakes never get them.

Since it is dead already you can easily identify any venomous snake in Missouri, and I believe the rest of the U.S., by looking at their belly. If there is a single row of scales all the way to the tail they are venomous. If there is a single row to the anus and then a double row from their back to the tail is is not venomous.
I'm not far from St.Louis and have seen copperheads and rattlesnakes on the bluffs. I doubt you would see a cotton moccasin up on the bluffs but I have seen them in southern Missouri.

venomous or not snakes eat the vermin you don't want in your house, give them a wide berth and leave them be, just hate people who kill things just for the sake of killing it.
