What type of scope for XP-100

Just got a Remington XP-100 and want to scope it. My question is: Do I get a LER Pistol scope or do I get up close and personal with a rifle scope??? I guess a red dot scope is also in the mix. I probably will shoot off a bench with bags most of the time, paper & small critters. Just trying to tap the deep well of knowledge on this forum before I go off half cocked. Thanks to all in advance,

Gary

Depends a whole bunch on what it is chambered in and whether or not it has a muzzle brake. I had a 22-250 hand cannon (similar to a xp-100) with a brake and I had a 6.5-20 rifle scope mounted on it.

Also depends on how it is held. I shot a 270 WSM with a brake & rifle scope on it and it cut the bridge of my nose. But after I saw the proper way to shoot it I shot the man's 325 WSM with rifle scope and had no problem.

Sorry, the caliber is 221 fireball, 10" barrel, no brake, the gun is bone stock, with the exception of a Weaver one piece mount. Barrel code "X Y" , December 1974. Looks to have been fired very little, came with 60 rounds of factory ammo 20, of them fired.

Go with a 4x16 or the aforementioned 6.5x20 rifle scope. You can't hit what you can't see. Just get your sight picture then back your head away, you'll be fine.

The only problem with those pesky pistol scopes is the power range is lacking those high numbers...
The best one of those is the Burris 3x12 bar none.....
You can easily double that power with a rifle scope....
I shoot a 338-284 in a XP-100 with a 5.5x22x50 Nightforce NSX and have never been poked in the eye, and that pistol even with a brake installed is a handful...
One of my 6 BR XP-100's wears a 12x42 BR scope on it, no eye poking here either.....

remember this is 221, not a hand cannon, the range you may look for on pd, etc, is about 200-250 max.

therefor the Leup 2.5x8 erf is a great choice, figure 8x that at 200 = 25yd image. I have used them on Sil match shooting and they are great clear scopes.

All of my XP-100's & XP-100R's have-
Leupold 2.5-8X EER scope mounted in Leupold Rem S/A DD 1pc base/medium rings has worked on several XP-100 & XP-100 R's that I've been shooting for the past 20+ yrs.

The 350 RemMag in an XP-100R is a hand full w/ 225's @ 2650fps but hammers moose & black bears where they stand.

Thanks to all for the sage advice, I really appreciate the suggestions. I found a Sightron SII 2.5x10x32 in the back of the safe and mounted it on the XP-100, it is a 10" rifle scope with about 4" eye relief. I will give it a try and if not to my liking may get a Leupold EER scope.

Thanks Again,
Gary

just get yourself a Burris LER scope and enjoy , they make the best scope for a XP100 i ever had it was a straight 284 Win that would shoot 1/2 inch groups all day,but had a lot of whip from the center grip stock.

That means "you tried" a Leupold… and didn't like it.

I'd ask —— Why didn't you like the Leupold ?

Dick ,

I didn't like the extended hold on the LeupoldEER. Glass was fine but my style of shooting I never was comfortable with shooting my reargrip XP from a rest . I prefer a crowded position or as some say climbing up on the scope . The Burris EER scope was a lot better as far as distance I was more relaxed maybe 10 -12 inches from scope Leupold was full arms length .JM2C .
