What type of rests for 50yd bench match?

I have never shot in a match and dont want to show up to my first one and look like a noob. My 10/22 with Tony Kidd parts is finally built and ready to shoot in the next match at the local club. Anyone have some recomendations of what front and rear rest I need to buy, The match is 50yds 25 shots one per bullseye.

Thanks Anthony

Anthony,

While I dont shoot RFBR, I highly suggest to avoid making a "Noob" mistake is to pick something up you really dont fully understand before you show up and want to compete at your first match.

So, what I am saying is just go attend your first match as a spectator and see what everyone is using. More often than not, when striking up a conversation with experienced shooters about their equipment and admiting to them you dont know much/diddley. They will sit you down behind their stuff, have you shoot off of it and you can see what it is all about.

So bring your new rig, but dont compete. Just start asking questions and look, ask & look some more...

Nothing more a shooter likes to do is to show off their stuff.....

Good luck.

Anthony,
It will depend on the type of match and how much you wish to spend.

A club match (which I think you are interested in) requires a lot repeat a lot less than a sanctioned match.

For a club match a Caldwell BR rest is fine with a decent rear bag.

For a sanctioned match a Fulgham rest (about $800) and a Mini Gator bag ($145) is just the start. The 10/22 will not be competitive in this type match.

Before doing anything, check the rules for the match, clubs often make rules for their members that do not carry over to other shoots.

The Ultimate front rest for Rim Fire: http://www.randolphmachine.com/front.html

Rear rest: Edgewood or Protektor Model

It's hard to beat the creations from Fred Sinclair, made in the USA products, and prices hard to beat! This is my choice for the best front rest and it is LEGAL for all competitions, centerfire and rimfire score and group.

http://www.sinclairintl.com/.aspx/pid=39322/Product/Sinclair_Competition_Shooting_Rest_BR

For years this was the rest of choice and fully functional,w/ teir speed screw for rear leg, it gives you prcise up down fine adjustment to compliment the fine windage adjustment!

http://www.sinclairintl.com/.aspx/pid=38376/Product/Sinclair_Generation_II_Benchrest_Windage_Rest

This company has the best products to cater to the die hard extreme accuracy shooters I have found, not to mention the largest selection at usualy a lwer price and higher quality. They are know for the past 3 years owned by Brownels, :-\ a real shame as I belonged to the same range as the owner and was and still am goods friends with him. But I buy his products cause THEY WORK!

But I agree with Rod in Fargo, go observe a match first, I and many others have not headed this advice and showed up with stuff that was not going to help us compete against the others because our equipment was useless for the purpose, money spent for a lost cause, and when you do find what works best don't skimp and buy cheaper gear just to get by. When you buy the more expensive items for each cause, it will be a product that works better and last longer, usualy the last one you'll need.

well maybe i am a little different, go shoot with what you have even if just a sand bag and have fun. Then you can decide if its for you before you spend any money. Most shoots i have been to the shooters are very
helpful and welcome newbies (some will even let you test their rests) . just my experience..
After all we were all new one time.

http://www.rwhart.com/ page 9 has a good selection, the advice of going to a match first is good

i have used the Hart rest i bought in 1972 and it is still competetive without a lotof the cost others are selling

I use a Bi-pod and a rear Protector bag. I consistently shoot 497 with 20 or more bullseye. I personally like shooting from a bi-pod over a rest. It's less expensive too.

Hello All,

I'm a bit confused on the issue of rests.

I thought that one-piece rests were illegal in rimfire, and I see that people (incl. Joe Friedrich) have them in ARA matches.

I have a Gene Davis Rem 40X custom (see pic) and my first targets are shown (according to ontarget, the group size is 0.183", 0.349MOA). I use a Caldwell Fire control rest, a damn good rest for the $$$$. What competitions are one-piece rests legal in.

By the way of going to a match before you buy is a great idea. I'd like to see what others are using and possibly try out other things.

Other than a small club match, the 10/22 is not competitive with the bolt rifles.
Most rimfire disciplines allow the one piece rest. You need to check the rulebook for each organization. I highly recommend attending a match before spending funds on anything. The "ULTIMATE" rest just may not be the ULTIMATE.
stevenorlando, you could improve your score by 10 points getting rid of the Fire Control.

I believe the Pappas one piece rest is the best choice for 50 yard, rimfire bench rest. That said, I use a rest built by the Altoona, PA technical school and an Edgewood rear bag. I can compete with this arrangement but do not win.

Rifle and ammunition make a major difference in the benchrest game. I am currently using a Kimber 82G with Federal Gold Medal Ultra Match. Again, I can compete but do not win. If you want to have a shot at winning, then you will have to get a custom action with a really good barrel, a well bedded stock and a good rest. Then you will have to find the ammunition that your rifle likes and practice like everything to learn how your setup performs under different environmental conditions.

.22 LR bench rest is a lot of fun. I think it is more difficult than center fire benchrest because you cannot control the quality of your ammunition. Good ammunition is tough to find on a consistent basis. I strongly recommend that you attend a few matches and watch. .

Thanks!

But not in the Dallas area!

I like the Pappas or the Ahrens. Roger Von Ahrens is close to me and I'm thinking of attending a match at his range. He has a backorder on them.

Sinclair makes a good rest (two piece).

We provide the rifle, the rest and good ammunition for newbies to experience the game. If you are in the Dallas, TX area, come shoot with us. Advice and equipment is available for free for newcomers.

Where is Dallas are your matches. I would like to come out and watch a match.

This thread is being hiijacked!

I found out that the only .22 BR discipline that allows one-piece rests is ARA. IR 50/50 , RBA, American Rimfire Group and Postal BR only allows two piece.

I plan to shoot two ARA and one IR 50/50 matches/month, and participate in the Postal BR, so I need both kinds of rests.

I think the Ahrens and the Pappas look just different enough for legal reasons. Kilough Shooting Sports sells the Pappas, and I think there is a backorder on the Ahrens. So if I get more serious about this, I'll probably go with the Pappas.

Steve

I spoke with Dan Kilough of Kilough Shooting Sports, and he told me that Roger Von Ahrens no longer namufactures the Ahrens rest. It is now manufactured and sold by Hall. So whoever mentioned that in this post is correct. Roger Von Ahrens no longer manufacturers that rest.
